MMOs....which ones are worth it?

Interesting, I might have to check this out. Never had any long-term luck with these kinds of free MMOs.
If you do and you decide to sign up for the European version then let me know beforehand so I can tell you what server to pick :P

Guild Wars is fun, even though it's way past it's prime it's still heavily played and there are quite a few people out and about in some of the more popular hubs. But you will find some that have no people at all. Regardless still worth a play, of course you might just want to wait until GW 2 comes out. Though they'll be different games.

WoW is fun, but every time I sub to it, I get bored after a week or other games take precedence.

Age of Conan was also fun enough to make me subscribe for a few months. The combat is fairly cool for an MMO and game is a lot better than it used to be (so I'm told). But it's not always easy to get into groups to do dungeons, so you might end up just playing solo the entire time..which works but isn't as much fun.

LOTRO is probably my favorite MMO and one I play more than the rest. Been playing it since it's release date and it's been improved upon quite a bit. Sometimes it's hard to get groups for certain things, but that's why being in a decently sized kin is good..most of the time those kin members will do any quest with you so you will be able to experience the entire game. Which server you play on is important, there are a few servers where there are quite a bit more people. Other than that, it's your generic MMO, but in a great setting.

DDO is also fairly good, I subbed to that for a while. Server choice is also important on that game as parties are needed at higher levels. Though they've made it to where you can do a lot of the stuff solo which is good. It's F2P but I recommend subbing as F2P can be a big grind.

Right, but given the scope of the game it's entirely reasonable provided I finish them in a timely manner. One Bioware RPG per character, and it's up to their usual high quality. I have yet to see if the end game content is worth paying for, right now I'm here for the story. It's simple if you can beat all 8 classes to level 50 in a timely manner you can pay only what you would have to pay for a single bioware game. Each character has enough content to be classified as its own game. These are usually 60 dollar affairs. So that means if you can beat each class within six months. Your only paying for one bioware RPG game. If you go beyond six months for each class, then it becomes an additional fee. If you look at it from the single player perspective. All it requires is some math to figure this out. Basic, basic grade school math.
With the difference that I bought KotOR in 2003 and can (and do) still play it whenever I want without paying extra again.

New question....how much bandwidth (per month) does an MMO consume? Excluding initial download (if any). Presume 5 hours play per day.

Indeed, that is the only advantage to a single player experience in this case. You can keep playing it without needing to pay more. I'm just saying it's hypothetically possible to only pay an amount of money comparable to single player games and get the full experience.

It's a pretty damn big advantage if you have as little time for gaming as I do, and want to spend part of that time on other games you enjoy as well.

True, not everyone has as much spare time as myself. But it is really quite a good game. So far in 3 day's I've gone from 1-12 (almost 13) and have only played a few hours a day. So it's entirely plausible to get it done even in a month or two. It all depends.

Guild Wars 2 looks promising. No monthly subscription either. Dunno when it comes out though.

When its "ready", A-net keep saying. Betting around Summer, but definitely after the Elementalist update, Part 3 of Wind of Change, and the Canthan New Years.

But ya, Guild Wars, though not a true MMO in a sense, still hold a lot of players ingame, though most of them are there for finishing up their accomplishment just so they can get free items in Guild Wars 2.

For free MMORPGs, LotRO. For paid MMORPGs, Rift.

I really enjoyed Warhammer online, but I guess one of the reasons for that is that I'm a great Warhammer fan.
Guildwars 2 looks very promising.

I've been playing World of Warcraft for free and have found it somewhat fun to play.

Problem is that I'm not sure when I hit the level cap of 20 that I'd want to pay $15/month to stick with it.

I know other MMOs are "free" but that you pay real money for certain upgrades you might want for your character.

There are so many out there. World of Warcraft is regarded as the most "polished" but others get mixed reviews. Some are raves, some are jeers...on the same title.

Anyone able to offer suggestions on what MMOs are worth getting into?

If you like WoW then I would suggest you check out Bioware's recently released MMO Star Wars The Old Republic, went live Dec. 20, 2011. http://www.swtor.com/ This game has pretty much everything in WoW but it also has a completely voiced storyline for every class. I have been playing Smuggler class and I have to say the storyline is what keeps me logging in, the levels and the equipment don't matter as long as I find out what happens next in the story. Bioware is famous for story in games and they have delivered big time in that regard. Every quest NPC, even minor side quests are completely voiced with your character replying in all conversation. All quests can be done with a group of players and when you win "rolls" so that you get to talk in conversation then you gain social points which gets you access to special social gear. It seems pretty fair for the rolls in conversations as most groups I have been in multiplayer everyone got a chance to speak.

A really really fun game, think it of Knights of the Old Republic, 3 ,4, 5, and mabye more all in one box, and an MMO.

This. I'm definitely keeping an eye on that game. No monthly fee and it looks much more fun than most other MMOs.

I've looked at TOR, but I'm seeing a lot of the things i was tired of when I quit WoW in that game, so I'm not really interested anymore. I'll look up videos of the class stories online just because they're fairly interesting, but that's about it.

There might be a problem with the link right now because Bioware took the servers down so they can put up the first patch since going live and have since announced that maintenance will take longer then they anticipated...While it is really nice to see a patch so quick out of the gate, I am chomping at the bit to get back into the game...last night I got to Chapter 2 and I am level 32 Scoundrel who is a healer and I have stealth and lots of close combat skills...think of it as the WoW Rogue with healing! :D

$15 is not a big deal, I spend more on a meal for lunch. $15 for a entire months worth of game play time. A game with other people and lots of content.
I played the following, WOW (4+ accounts) Rift, EQ 1/2, Warhammer online, LOTRO, EVE and many more.
So far The old republic has been a blast.

I have logged in well over 50 hours now (if not close to 70+) and for the price I paid I feel I already have my money's worth. I only have a level 30 along with a 12 (hand full of sub 10's) and I still have plenty of my first 30 days.

I will surpass a $1 paid to 1 hour played before the first 30 days run out, and then its all gravy from there.
You guys can say what you want but all games can be viewed as a "waste of time/money" but not everyone feels that way.

The story is amazing for the trooper and already looking better for BH and SI. The JC is good as well.

Finding a good MMO that you like can be a tremendous value in terms of money spent to time played. Besides Morrowind/Oblivion and fallout 3 no other games besides WOW, rift and EVE have managed to give me so many played hours.

I paid $85 USD for my (deluxe) copy of TOR, and then next month. Thats $100. However I will have far more than 100 hours in before the end of my first months time.

The Old Republic. I can't seem to get enough of it.
I know, I simply do not have enough time, its the only game lately that I have stayed up far later than I should have playing. Not even Skyrim managed that feat.

My main trooper's story is coming to a conclusion (act I, level 30) and its been exciting, can't wait to see what Act II has in store. The JC/shadow has been good to level 12. What really peaks my interest is the Sith Inq and Bounty hunter. Both (only level 4's) have had really, really good starts.

The combat is fairly standard, similar to WoW, but with no auto attacks.
Its the story and presentation that make is so wonderful. Add in the fact that when you choose a path or dialog option in cases its permanent. Social points and levels lead to armor that can be upgraded.
Flashpoints have been a blast.

I was excited for Rift and Warhammer online, TOR has melted my face so far. Sure it does have some minor issues, but the story is amazing.

I have been in TOR since about mid November and last night I just got back to the point where I was in Beta and a bit more as I left the end of Chapter 1 to discover after launch and I concentrated on testing out the crafting after I dropped off the story in beta. I LOVE the storyline of the Smuggler, it is hilarious, dangerous, and a ton of fun, basically you get to be your version of Han Solo with your character being good or bad, lightside or darkside. I have gone completely lightside on my smuggler and I have to say its been one sweet ride! Got to go check if the servers are back yet....
