Modding BFG edition

It was probably already discussed here - if so, please feel free to remove this thread :)

My question is simple - what about mods for the BFG edition? We have the full source code, so everything should be clear - how do we update the .resources files? How to create a new .resource file and use it in a mod?
All I wanted to do is modify the sound .def files - weapon sounds are too quiet in the BFG edition, especially the double barrel shotgun. I wanted to up the volume of some weapons a bit to increase the audio dynamic range, but... I can't find a way to use the modified files in the game.

I know how to extract the resource files. There is an update command in the console, but it doesn't seem to work or I'm using it wrong. There's also a command to create a new resource file from scratch, but it's asking for a manifest file first, most likely containing the list of files to include. So has anyone experimented with it? Perhaps some popular D3 mods could be ported to the BFG edition?

Thanks in advance for any tips :)

I see things all over the web about how we can mod this edition of the game, but I don't see any way to do it. Perhaps the editor is included with the source code?

Here are some mods for the game, don't know where the came from or how they were made:
