Mods that I'd wish

Post » Fri Aug 21, 2009 3:21 pm

Hey! I'm going to buy The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, this saturday.

The thing is, I'd really like some mods to imporve the game... The things that I want are:

Make gaining levels useful, a mod that pre-sets levels for all creatures, I don't want to see bandits with daedric armour...

More realistic combat, I mean come on, on hardest difficulty it takes like 20 hits to kill a rat... A RAT. I want a mod that makes combat deadly and adrenaline filled, not just clicking a foe to death...

More armour, swords and such, more things overall.

More quests, dungeons, locations and NPCs.

I'm planning on making a Khajit Thief/Assasin, is there any mod that would improve those aspects of the game (For example if I kill someone the guards ALWAYS know it... Scary and unrealistic).

That's quite a list... I hope someone is kind enough to help!

First thing to do is to get an account on, say, tesnexus.com There you can download all the mods you want
1. http://www.fuzionmedia.com/oblivion/afleveling.html for levelling, at least it's what I prefer
2. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12249 for balancing the creatures and enemies, it's a massive mod and it changes http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/convergence.html in the game. This mod also requires to get acquainted with http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes4Mod:Wrye_Bash and to read some tutorials as it is quite difficult to setup.
3. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24936 or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273 for combat, requires additional software (the script extender http://obse.silverlock.org/)
4. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11911 to fix the matter with the guards
Although you should play the unchanged game for a while, then add stuff. Simply look at tesnexus for yourself and download what suits your needs.

P.S.: this belongs into the mods section...

P.P.S.: Well, for your first play-through it's better to avoid big level scaling mods at all. Add them in later, when you are more experienced with the game.

Some individual recommendations:
  • http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763 gives the game a much better user interface
  • http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11280 same as above but dark color scheme. I'm using this one.
  • http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25078 covers every economic aspect. Totally configurable and great support by the author!
  • http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23324 adds lots of new NPC's to the game. From a German author, but plays very well with English Oblivion as dialogues will continue in English. Try it!

I'd suggest avoiding FCOM if this is your first time through the game. It not only changes a huge amount, but it can be tricky to get working properly. Far better to concentrate on the one element of it that makes monsters independent (for the most part) of your leveling: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15256. I don't use it; I use two of the other parts of FCOM, Fran's and Mart's. But Oscuro's is the one that you clearly want, based on what you've stated, above. I think you will be very pleased by it, though it's quite unforgiving of new adventurers wandering around into places they shouldn't be.

Armor? Weapons? You want to check out http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18417. Adds over 1000 items in leveled lists throughout the game.

For realistic combat, try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273. Really enhances combat.

AFLeveling is a very old mod and there are others that do the same thing, only better. If you like the system, then I suggest you try Kobu's Character Advancement System. It does everything that AFLeveling does and then some, and is much more configurable.

thank you, I will try it out!
I just hope that it won't interfere with the vampire overhaul mods I've installed

My list was already linked  I'm flattered :D

Anyhoo, you do definitely want Armamentarium Complete, as fable2 said; it's easily the biggest and most well-implemented armour/weapon mod you'll find.

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1764 is pretty much a necessity for any stealth character; it allows you to configure many aspects of the thief/assassin game.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25462 is nice for preventing guards from being mysteriously aware of every move you make (although it is a bit script-heavy if I recall)

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22894 also helps with the whole hetting-away-with-crimes aspect of the game, in that if you kill the witnesses you get no bounty

For adding more NPC's into the game, check out Crowded Roads Advanced, Tamriel Travelers, MoDem's City Life, and Crowded Cities. Also, if you want to distribute items from various mods to them, get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17557.

I hope this is helpful!

I highly suggest Thieves Arsenal - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9655
It most notably adds a blackjack to knock unsuspecting enemies unconscious and allows you to rob them without violence. Additionally you get some awesome new arrows such as a climbable vine (or rope, though I never found out how to switch), gas arrow (knock em unconscious), grease arrow (slippery grease = unconscious + damage if placed at top of stairs etc) water arrows (to dim certain torches/lamps), and noise maker arrow which distracts all NPCs to the area it lands.

Edit: and if you're like, and have a sick perversion with knocking enemies unconscious then dragging them to a faraway location (preferably in the wild), or just want to hide a body to remain undetected. This makes doing so a lot easier - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5011

And Vaults of Cyrodiil compliments it nicely - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9357
Just about all the lamps/torches in Vaults of Cyrodiil are compatible with the water arrows, so between the 2 mods you can really have some fun thievery.

You're welcome! It's a great list, that is why :D

Yes, or try out the Oblivion Alive I've mentioned. It's really a great NPC mod (adding over 800 NPC's IIRC, plus some other stuff here and there) which is known too little.

The excellent lists already provided should get you everything you're looking for. You may also want to try my http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29544 mod. The armors give you 15%-75% Chameleon while sneaking, depending on your Sneak skill level.

Important Note: If your computer has Windows Vista or Windows 7, http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Windows_Vista before installing Oblivion or any mods. It will save you a LOT of headaches.

For the realistic combat one I'd also recommend a http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=814477&hl= in addition to DR and the like. That way a dagger doesn't kill you in 2 hits while a fireball is just a minor inconvenience

As for quests there's the http://knol.google.com/k/toql-big-quest-mods# and http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?s=&showtopic=1072579&view=findpost&p=15598738 for my opinions on most oft he mods in the TOQL.

The last link there also links to my topic listing topics like his, maybe something helpful there.

Ok, bought the game today.

I have played the game before, and it was only fun for so long, that's why I want mods to expand the gameplay (Espcially the Combat & Stealth).

I have problems installing Deady Reflexes, it won't work. I have it in the database, and can select them, but won't work in-game, I just get an error message and the game goes down.

Questions:

How to get Deadly Reflexes working?

What mod is the mod that let's you start in the boat in the Imperial City?

I tried some other mods too, but had horrible lag, why is that (My computer can handle Crysis, Dawn of War 2 and other high-demanding games on max graphics, so it can't be system requirements or something like that)?

How do I know if mods are compatible with eachother?

Thanks in advance.

Just keep in mid that if you start adding a bunch of extra NPCs into the game, your performance is going to suffer.

Yes it could, Oblivion is one of the most demanding games you can have. It's also not optimized very well, even people with great rigs don't exactly get the kind of performance they would expect. If you want an idea of where you stand, it would help if you posted your system specs, as well as your load order. As for Deadly Reflex, you do have OBSE installed don't you? I don't use it myself, but I'm pretty sure you need OBSE in order for it to work.

This is the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11495 mod.

Unfortunately I know nothing about the Deadly Reflex mod; if I were you I'd search for the Deadly Reflex thread on these forums.

Also, all of the more popular mods will note in their descriptions or readmes if they are incompatible with each other. Also, tools like Wrye Bash, Oblivion Mod Manager, and TES4Edit can help identify conflicts.

There is a Deadly Reflex 5 OMOD version on TESNexus, you should use this one, and install it via OBMM.

Only advise I do have is, get on the boat, but take one step after another. The mods wont run away, and it really takes time to understand the sh...

initially OOO caught my attention, and got me back to Oblivion,
now 1 and a half months later, I am still overwhelmed, as crpg oblivion doesnt svck,
but I am glad to run it 30mins without a CTD! (ok, 50 + mods isnt this bad, and the famous stuttering is nearly gone)
