Morality?

Post » Mon Aug 13, 2012 5:54 am

Do you believe in morality? Do you always try to do what's "morally correct"? If so why do you do this? I am asking these questions because... Well... I'm not completely sure. Personally I do not beleive in "morality" and I've been called selfish and evil for it many times. So what's your opinion on morality? One more thing, no religion!!!

Morality is like truth and beauty- it depends on your perspective.

I myself follow my own code of honour which includes my own personal concepts of morality, but I don't go around trying to force it on to other people, especially since I know their concepts of morality are far different from mine.
However, I don't think that 'morals', and 'being a good person' are exactly the same thing. Humans are selfish in nature anyways.

Just my opinions.

Indeed

Also, morals and religion go hand in hand. We are only going to get a fraction of the discussion here because of that.

I would consider myself moral, but it also depends on the situation. If fulfilling my moral obligations would cause greater harm than good, then wouldn't I be morally obligated to not fulfil my moral obligations?

I guess I have my own loose concept of "morality". Some people just take it waaay too far.
Basically, I do stuff. If my stuff realistically harms others, I will try not to do my stuff. If my stuff doesn't realistically harm others but is for some reason deemed "wrong" by others' standards which I don't agree with, I'll still do my stuff.

Yes I am, and my view of morality is the only correct one. It is my duty to force my rules on everyone in the world. Follow me or be forever deemed evil and beneath contempt.

That's where you are wrong mister. Know that I am the messenger of the only true set of morales. Children, don't fall into the arms of tricksters who wishes to destroy and taint our sacred morale.

Any discussion about morality without religion is not possible. But even unfounded arational secular morality is a necessary condition for society.

I agree with what Uncle Fuzzy said, without sarcasm. If a culture (mores, or a particular moral code) permits child abuse, or gender inequality under the law, or any other obviously immoral thing, then I do consider it evil, or at least backward, and I do think it should be corrected, within moral means, of course. What I consider "obviously immoral" we can only take as given in this discussion, but I think you all know, deep down, what I'm talking about.

Nope. Evil is a point of view, a label used to categorize people who are a threat. Good is an excuse.

I always love to bring out the "point of view" card, it makes people mad . I follow my own code. Wear the costume of a lovable person, use people when you can, be better than those around you, strive for the best, let your haters be your motivators and let ambition for success guide you..

The funny thing about morality is that it only really seems to matter when interacting with other people. Morality is like cheating in a video game.

If you're cheating at a multiplayer game you ruin everybody else's fun.

If you're cheating on a singleplayer game then everything is just fine.

I like to keep my life as singleplayer as possible, avoiding the multiplayer bits as much as I can. I have morals I suppose, but they don't really matter. Nobody cares when I enter the http://www.hongfire.com/cg/data/25/caramelldansen.swf in my game. :hehe:

Now I'm going to take personal offence to what some guy on the internet said and make it my personal mission to make you feel unwelcome here and flame you until your views are vanquished. After my subsequent banning, I will laugh at how I told the world the truth and was silenced for it, then living the rest of my life with a grin on my face thinking I was the victor of our feud when in fact everyone remembers about that "one Oreo guy who went too far"

Wouldn't be very good morals then would they

I think that one can do as they please as long as it does not negatively impact the sphere of another sentient being. If one is forced to make a decision regarding the welfare of others, the lesser of the two evils must be chosen to the best of your judgment. That's how my mind works anyway.

I'm now giving both of you a Look™ for offending my personaluniversal morals (or is it ethics, I always get them confused).

Er anyway, I try to do the right thing, at least when I can figure out what it might be.

Most people's morality depends on their religion so the question is a bit silly. I try not to put labels on my behavior, I just try to have an overall agreeable nature.

Let's pretend we never met :P

On topic : For me, morality is just a mask. I just doing what I think is right in my point of view. And I do sometimes doing "bad" things, but I always felt guilty afterwards.

There is nothing wrong with manlove. ;_;

I try to ignore ideas of right, wrong and try to use my empathy and judgement on what I feel would be the correct and what would be the harmful option.

I think morality can be talked about without bringing up religion, it is possible. . . just not on the internet. I can see how some religious people may take offense at the discussion of morality sans religion. On a forum with different rules, this thread may have turned into something enlightening or it may have crashed and burned. I don't see it getting very far here though.
