Mourning Never Comes & Blood on the Ice

Post » Sun Sep 16, 2012 2:40 am

Contains Spoilers -

I'm a little confused with these quests and the possible bug that might stop me from eventually buying Hjerim. Apparently Killing Nilsine Shatter-Shield in the mourning never comes quest causes her mother Tova to commit suicide and bugs the Blood on the Ice quest and stops it from being activated and initially stop me from buying Hjerim.

If I complete Blood on the Ice first and then finish Mourning never comes, will I still be able to buy Hjerim?

I've never had a relation between the two. and I completed Blood on Ice successfully after Mourning Never Comes. I also triggered blood on ice from buying and exploring Hjerim after completing the the Civil War.

I may be over thinking it, but it seems to have happened to others and we all know how buggy these games can be and it never hurts to have a little feed back before you botch a play through...

If you finish BotI before starting Mourning Never Comes, you shouldn't have THAT particular problem. There can, however be other problems with BotI - make sure you always save before entering Windhelm and do the entire quest soon as it triggers, is my advice (which should be on your fourth visit to the Windhelm area, if you enter the city at night). That way you can easily do it again in case it bugs out or you skip steps by mistake (that can leave you stuck with a certain item in your inventory).

Once you've done BotI and progressed far enough in the Civil War questline, you can buy Hjerim, and by then the DB quest has nothing to do with it. You DON'T have to do the DB quest at all to buy Hjerim, and if Tova Shatter-Shield kills herself AFTER you've done BotI, it shouldn't cause any problems, either.

Many players and 'net sources would advise you to finish Blood on the Ice before getting near ANY other quest that could jeopardize it. I've never had any trouble with it, and others have flouted all the "rules" about doing it and still had no problems, but... you just never know. Make plenty of saves beforehand and along the way.

I assume you also realize that doing BotI will not be enough to make Hjerim available, right? You either have to start the CW for the Stormcloaks and complete a few quests for them, or join the Legion and completely finish the CW for the Empire. Buying the house is a reward for services to the Jarl of Windhelm, not for completing BotI. Depending on other things going on in your game, finishing the quest is sometimes necessary before purchase/decoration and sometimes not. When playing for the Legion I've had Brunwulf offer me the house and BotI never started until I'd already bought it and opened it up with my own key. If you're playing for the SCs you may not be able to buy the house until the quest is finished but that may have been changed with patches.

Oh, and once you've bought Hjerim: make sure to choose the "Clean up the mess"-option first when you buy furniture. Apparently you can be stuck with blood and gore in your house otherwise.

(I've read that you're supposed to get the clean-up for free once you've done BotI, but I haven't.)

I recall not being able to funish the house until I finished Blood on Ice. None of the upgrades were available. After the quest I talked to the steward and all the options were there including house clean up which I had to pay for.

Thank you that's exactly what I needed to know. Guess I'l reload to an earlier save and travel back and forth until BotI triggers, finish it then activate Mourning never comes and eventually decide who I will side with in the CW quests and buy Hjerim.

Thanks guys.
