Mouse & Keyboard perspective

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 1:45 am

Yesterday I was reading on these forums, someone said if you're on a PC just go get a controller. At the time I thought, why the hell would I do that. M&K has always been my preference.

Now I understand.

I did want to point out something interesting though. I am a human being, with eyeballs that can assimilate massive amounts of data very quickly - like a whole isle of stuff at the grocery store! Why then would I ever want to scroll through an ever increasing inventory of goodies one thing at a time? That killed me. Oh, you want something out of my bag? Let me go through the list one thing at a time to find it.... oh look! Shields are categorized under clothing, nice.

It honestly seems like they don't even bother having anyone on the QA team that uses a M&K, the interface is flaky if you're trying to use the mouse anyway, occasionally when clicking on items like "MISC" it just cancels the deal like I hit TAB.

I'm trying to hang in there for you guys, such a great legacy of history with this franchise. I'm so disappointed with the interface but I will get used to it, there's nothing else out there that compares to the elder scrolls.

I know plenty of people have posted complaints about the PC interface and I usually don't post but I couldn't help wanting to just speak up for once.

Actually, I prefer controlling the menu with keyboard. But yes, mouse support seems kind of broken.

I've taken to doing that as well. I noticed during creation that if I used the arrow keys it was much smoother to work with. Clicking on things didn't always work like I wanted and some of the click areas are so small, like those sliders. It makes using the mouse painful.

I still don't agree with using a controller. Sure, the menu system leaves a LOT to be desired from the perspective of using it with a mouse and keyboard (it was clearly almost exclusively designed to work with a controller), but I spend far more time actually playing the game then navigating the menu system, and in that respect the mouse/keyboard is still, and always will be, far superior to a controller.

I could care less. I play on PC and I'll use a controller or a K+M - whichever one works best for the specific game I'm playing.

It's completely STUPID to force yourself to only use a K+M if you know it's frustrating and that a controller would work better.

It's just stubborn stupidity.

K+M is great - IF THE GAME YOU ARE CURRENTLY PLAYING IS OPTIMIZED FOR IT.

If it's NOT, then you go with the control system that is IS optimized for.

Stop crying about the methods - start adapting to them.

It has seemed to me, so far, this is caused by not clicking on quite the right spot. If you click out of a clickable area it seems to take you back a menu. tbh, I'd rather it did nothing bc 9 times out of 10 I just yell at the screen when it does it.

The one thing I was hoping would be available with the keyboard is the 1-0 keys to bind weapons or items. hotkeys! Hotkey potions and Hotkey weapon setups. But I don't see this. 1-0 is useless?

The "Favorites Thing" Seems alright for an Console where you don't have a keyboard.... But wtf?

Stop crying about a failed native control scheme?

Apparently you can bind to the number keys, I haven't tried it yet but. After you add items to the favorite list THEN you can bind those to a number. To do so you open up the favorite menu, and hover the mouse over(or I imagine select it with error keys) then just hit the number you would like it to be.

Again, haven't actually tried this yet myself. Just read it on another post.

I appreciate the feedback. I'm headed back to play. I came to munch and post something after it crashed on me for the first time. I pressed R for something...don't remember.

Thanks again and enjoy your game. :)

Can't find the topic I read it on. It does work, I tried it out. Only issue seems to be that its for the right hand only.

I want to go home and try the binding of hot keys now... this would make the game so much more playable. I want to experiment with different weapon combinations, but it's such a pain to swap things now.

And I still can't drop things. I was able to sell excess crap at the store, but the R key does not drop things.

My mouse and keyboard don't even work right. there is no mouse pointer, and ESC doesn't bring up a menu to altar control scheme from gamepad to mouse. All the prompts on screen so far have been for Xbox pad....WTF?

Funny, I never thought of the mouse and keyboard of feeling weird before reading the forums... my brother just picked up the PS3 version and I can't imagine trying to play with a controller... it just seems like aiming would be such a pain. I noticed that navigating the menus with the mouse can feel weird but really all you have to do it not move the mouse and wheel up/down and click. It's when you move the mouse around WHILE wheeling up/down through, say conversations, it feels weird. The Skill/leveling up can simply be navigated with WASD and there's no problem there for me. For favorites, I can see how quickly the favorites list can become really long (I'm playing as a mage and have an quite a bit of spells Favorited). I haven't tried binding any keys but I'm gonna try that out now.

The problem I find with the mwheel is it sometimes skips over items, And I wish for conversations they let us keep the mouse for looking around, it feels weird moving the cursor to edge of screen to look around while in conversation, they should have made the topics in conversations selectable only with your direction keys and selectable with your "activate key". As right now it still feels we are locked into the conversation. Mind you we can easily leave the conversation with TAB. But I thought we'd still be able to move around, and if we went to far away the conversation would end. Still a lot better then Oblivion, and it's really only the lack of being able to look around smoothly with mouse that bothers me.

the WASD layout works great, the problem being you you change those keys to something else, they don't always work.

I shift my direction keys over to ESDF And then I change "F" for MouseButton2(I like to strafe right with my right hand), and for me ESD work to navigate menus and skills, but I can't move Right. Only workaround I have is to click the mouse button to the right of something to make it go that way.

However I don't find any of this game breaking. And I had made http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1255647-pc-help-cant-drop-items/page__view__findpost__p__19143869__fromsearch__1 about the binding issues, which was looked at and replied by a Bethesda Staff. So they are at least aware and it should be fixed in next patch.
