So I'm gonna be bored for a few nights this weekend, what are some good movies that you guys can recommend? I like horror and fantasy, mostly.

Depends on if you include B-movies in there. :P

Though, Night of the Living dead (1960) is a classic.

If you're into horror then Lake Mungo is something a bit different. Probably not to everyone's taste though.

You know what a really fun movie to watch is? How To Train Your Dragon. I've seen it four times now, and just this week watched it twice in two days.

It's best on BluRay. All those CGI animated movies look so sharp in BD.

Got me a Hammer box set last weekend so I'm gonna watch Dracula: Prince of Darkness tonight. Can't go wrong with Christopher Lee.

That or Witchfinder General (which, apparently, is called the Conquerer Worm in the US) which is what I watched last night. Or sticking with Vincent Price, Theatre of Blood is a really really good - and little known - horror film with a really cool concept.

Someone suggested Night of the Living Dead, which is awesome, but Dawn of the Dead (original, obviously) is also classic and is perhaps a little easier to stomach if you prefer stuff with a more modern sheen or for some reason have a problem with black and white films.

For something a little newer, and if you don't mind subtitles (or happen to understand Norweigan) I'd recommend Dead Snow as a great semi-parody of the zombie genre, and probably the best since Shaun of the Dead. Plus my flatmate tells me I have to suggest 28 Days (and Weeks) Later which is definitely a modern classic. He also suggests Alien, which everyone should see. And the Thing (1982). And the Fly (1986) too. He got really excited about those last two.

I'm a bit of a scardy cat when it comes to certain scary movies (not the conventional ones), so maybe my recommendations are a bit invalid:
  • Insidious (although, I only watched half -- too scared ;(
  • ...the Paranormal Activity series
Not pure fantasy, but:
  • Pan's Labyrinth

Destroyin' demons is a good thing son; killin' people is bad.

Princess Mononoke could work for fantasy.

I would also suggest "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" & "Spirited Away"

And also the classic "the dark Chrystal"

The original 1970s Amityville Horror? The Horror genre is so miserably played out and predictable I can't think of a single good one that's come out in decades.

For Horror I would haver to say

The Others (Best horror film ever made imo)

Shutter Island (not really a horror as such, more of a mystery thriller but a very good film)
