Music to write fantasy to

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 9:17 am

So I'm trying to write a fantasy novel. I want it to be equal parts epic fantasy and equal parts fantastic (if you know what I mean).

I started writing a little last night, and had some Skyrim OST playing in the background, along with a few songs from Youtube that supposedly stimulate creativity.

So I'm looking for any music you guys can think of that might help foster creativity and focus for the writing at hand.

If you could list them in sections that they would apply to, that would be great. For example:

Epic Battle scene - (Suggested Song)
Contemplative monk scene - (Suggested Song)

Thanks guys. :foodndrink:

edit: Songs with minimal or no lyrics would be preferred.

I've always liked listening to Evanescence whilst writing fantasy things. There is lyrics but they aren't too distracting.

Otherwise, I listen to classical music. Definitely blood-pumping material to write to for your epic battle scene, or heartbreaking if you're killing someone off.

Rhapsody of Fire, or Rhapsody or whatever they're called have some pretty epic fantasy-themed songs, I would recommend them, and I'm sure Nightwish has a couple epic songs as well, as for the monk, I have no idea.

Right now with what i'm writing being sad/grimdark i'm listening to the operatic pieces of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. There are several good scores to listen to such Soldier's Honor, Trisha's Lullaby, Dissident's Creed, Beyond The Walls and Dante's theme from the first Fullmetal Alchemist Anime. Another one I recommend is Trigun's Scattered Rain and Never Could Have Been Worse.

Might also check out musical scores from Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle along with Nasica and the Valley of The Wind. Bleach has started to produce some amazing OSTs that i've only heard through the anime on advlt Swim. One is Stand Up Be Strong, Power To Strive (Grimjow's fight with Ichigo), Treachery (1st or 2nd movie very goth opera extremely cool), and Fade To Black (there's some weird number think there's 13a which is what i'm thinking about).

Game music wise if you can find it the musical score by Shawn McPherson for DMC3 is great. Most notable for me is Beowful battle theme, Virgil Battle 1 & 2, and Son Of Sparda Remix by Shaw McPherson.

Don't know if any extremely "fantasy" style musical scores though you could look at the music for FFX it's not bad.

Probably my favorite song in the whole TES series. And best for fantasy writing I would imagine.

Howard Shore did a fantastic job with the LOTR complete score. Lots of epicness.
