Mysterious Stranger or Miss Fortune?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:52 pm

I thought Miss Fortune was a perk for bad luck on your enemies. I didn't know it was an actual person just like the Mysterious Stranger. I just came about this just now. This looks funny. I loved the Mysterious Stranger in Fallout 3, but I don't know, he just doesn't seem worth it this time, it's like, been there, done that. So I am thinking to taking the Miss Fortune for something different.

How do you guys and gals like her? Is she worth it? Is it good comic relief? Does she even help? There are a few times in Fallout 3, I needed the Mysterious Stranger. I even loved how I could dress up like him in the game. I am trying to do this in New Vegas so no luck finding a long coat like I did in Fallout 3.

So I made a poll out of this. Multiple selections is allowed. If you choose more than one box please explain.

I went with Miss Fortune, just to try something different. (Plus, she seemed to fit more with my Female / Cherchez la Femme character.)

I'll have to try Mysterious Stranger to see if he's any different, but Miss Fortune doesn't seem nearly as powerful as the FO3 Stranger. Might be a side effect of the new DT system? But she does knock people down, so maybe her attack is different. Hmm.

Actually I believe Miss Fortune has different effects(either does knockdown or cripples random limb and a few other things) and only shows up when "you are having a tough time" Mysterious Stranger is more of a finisher-type guy.

I'm pretty sure Miss Fortune shows up more frequently but only does fatigue damage and therefore doesn't kill enemies.
The Mysterious Stranger however does still one shot enemies.

Miss Fortune is meant to knock people down. Mysterious Stranger is meant to kill them.

From The Vault Wiki:
Miss Fortune's attack, as opposed to the attack of the Mysterious Stranger, will not kill in one hit, but rather inflicts Fatigue damage, knocking the enemy to the floor. Knocked down enemies remain incapacitated for 10 seconds, during which time they are free to be attacked or have their inventory looted. Each shot does a small amount of damage to enemies with low DR, and her attacks may also damage or outright break weapons her targets are carrying.

Also
Miss Fortune appears in V.A.T.S. more frequently than the Mysterious Stranger.

So that might be more of a bonus for some people.

Are the two mutually exclusive?

Nope. You can have both. Not at the same time, of course, but one can appear in VATS some time and the other another time.

Mysterious Stranger. I even loved how I could dress up like him in the game. I am trying to do this in New Vegas so no luck finding a long coat like I did in Fallout 3.

I haven't tried either one yet in NV, though I am seriously considering Miss Fortune. In regard to finding an outfit to pull off the long coat look, there are at least two that I have found so far - first is in Primm, in the sheriff's office (only before you help get a new one, once a new sheriff is in place the coat is gone), and a coat on Caleb McCaffrey (sp?) the guy you need to hunt down in the strip for the Garretts.

There's also a challenge perk, apparently unlocked by 15 appearances of either (I'm at 13 for Miss Fortune, only 5 Stranger), that makes them both show up more frequently. I'm hoping that works pretty well, as right now I'm using VATS a lot for single shots just to increase my chance of assistance.

and you can find on the mysterious stranger sone, the lone drifter. and a "mysterious 44. magnum" that plays the mysterious stranger theme when you pull it out.

It would be funny to see both of them appear at the same time... The enemy gets one shotted while he breaks a leg on the floor... :P

both are useless imho, mainly because they only activate in vats.

I started a new game. My last character had luck 1 but I am really missing not having the Mysterious Stranger perk. So my character has Luck 6 now. Well 7 with a level up, and the it will be 8 how ever I get it to that. Please don't say, I want it to be a surprise for me. I know it's something about an

.

I always got a LOL from the MS perk in F3, so having Miss Fortune will be nice. Funny I thought it was a Missfortune perk, I didn't know it was an actual Girl LOL. Now I see Miss Forturne. :D

I like Mysterious stranger personally, but it keeps me in V.A.T.S. when he comes up. He'll kill the enemy, then just stand around in his "yellowish aura" with the cowboy music playing, then leave when he feels as though is presence has been acknowledged.

i started my character with luck at 9, so hopefully when i get miss fortune, then mysterious stranger, they'll show up more often. i do this because i use vats ALOT and also need the increased critical chance since i'm using energy weapons.

Yeah- I just experienced the same thing........I got Miss Fortune first, and for a laugh (and because my character is very lucky) I got MS too. So, it does wait a while after he shoots the target, to exit vats/that effect. And I thought it was just annoying, until.....

......I fast travelled somewhere I hadnt really been too, and found myself surrounded by deathclaws. So, I go into vats, throw a poisoned knife at one of their legs, and MS shows up. Ok.......so, my character is visible on the right of the screen, MS is standing on the left, facing the camera kinda looking straight ahead. The effect remains, but the game isn't glitching or pausing, nooooo, its carrying on like I'm still in vats, but I'm not doing any actions. The deathclaws are still moving, entering stage (screen) left, passing behind MS like a procession, at least 4 or 5 deathclaws. My character is still squatting there unable to move, and is getting wailed on by these deathclaws, and pushed off the screen (exit stage right). And as you say MS just stands there looking all glowy, and just as I'm about to die off screen he casually turns his head to look in the direction of my character...........lot of help he was.

1) Never used either one. Never even bothered with Mysterious Stranger in Fallout 3. Just never needed him and found other perks usually more useful.

2) ' Can't be bothered with anyone them. Please explain below' makes no sense whatsoever. Do you mean 'Can't be bothered with EITHER ONE of them' ?

Miss Fortune for me, just 'cause I'd rather have a girl in a spangly costume looking out for me than a guy in a shabby mack. Though I am fond of both, and would take both perks if I had perk slots going spare, which I never do...

Game Breaker Glitch:
Having both of them at the same time caused both of them to go into VATS at the same time, (Probably a bug.) And then they shot eachother. Non stop though, it was really... aggravating. I had to ditch that file because it would happen constantly.

Ah, good to know, shan't bother going for both. Must've been annoying for you, but it does give me a pleasing mental image of the two of them duking it out... I wonder who would win.

Does this happen all the time, or once in a blue moon? I guess the first time, would be great and funny to watch, 2nd, meh, but 3rd time, would get annoying.
