[REQ] Name your save games

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 11:55 pm

Hi folks,

I have no idea if this is likely to be possible or not, but I was wondering if anyone was planning on a mod that would allow players to enter their own filenames for game saves, or at least including the character name in the filenames.

This would make it much easier to play with multiple characters, and would be a bit more fluid that using the console and typing stuff like save "Bob McKhajiit BladeInDark 3" or save "Beorn Wulfstan Just Married" or whatever.

At the moment the standard Number + Location filename formula isn't very helpful... In fact, if you look at the filenames they actually include the character's name, it just doesn't show up in the menu! You have to hover over them...

You can do this right in the console.

Just open the console (~ key) and enter:

Save X

Replacing the X with the name of your save. Your named save can only be a single word, but you can use _ or - to connect words (such as "Save Arwen_Escape" or "Battle-01").

You don't in fact need to use underscores and hyphens to connect words, you merely need to enclose the words in quotes. The command, "save "Arwen Escapes"" will create a save called "Arwen Escapes". The filename will have the character name and the time played pre- and appended respectively. Also, um... the OP actually discussed exactly this in his post and was looking for an alternative.

Arwen was hit by Brain Drain!
Arwen's skill in Reading has decreased!
Arwen has lost a level!
(Sorry Arwen! ;) )

OP - I'm not sure exactly what it is you're trying to do, but it sounds like managing saves across multiple characters is in there somewhere. There are a couple of tools up on the Nexus that deal with multiple character save game management for Skyrim, I'd have a poke around with those and see if any will suit your needs. Personally I just create a subfolder for each of my characters, and just move the saves into the main folder depending on what character I feel like playing.

FYI: My way (Arwen-Escape) actually uses one less key press (than "Arewen Escape".

So, does this mean that I gain a level and you lose one? :)

BTW: I only saw the OP's first line when I replied. And due to my dumb head injury, I have about a 1 Language skill, but I still try.

I was just trying to help . . . I'll go away again and wait someplace else for the Creation Kit to be released.

I usually just run the words together to save even more keystrokes. No one will ever see it besides me anyway.

Thanks Arwen I knew that there just HAD to be an entry somewhere!
Now, does anyone have a house mod?
