NAT question, not a rant.

Hello all.
Is it even possible to have an open NAT on the ps3 version of crysis 2?
I tried opening the ports on my router's firewall as well as putting my ps3 on the dmz, nothing seems to work :)
My nat is moderate by the way, jut wondering on you guys.

cheers.

my nat is open on other mutiplayer games. And my nat type was moderate in the crysis 2 demo, I didnt give much attention as it was a demo. I had thought crytek would fix it before the game was released but my nats still moderate and the lag is one of the issues thats killing this awesome game.

I dont think anyone has an open nat type in crysis 2, its either moderate or strict. So I think a moderate nat is as good as its going get.

aslong as you have nat type 2 or 1 then you have nothing to worry about. Black ops has the same glitch and shows a mod nat type. All my ports are open and my ps3 is even in a dmz and crysis still shows mod. What i have noticed is older games like mw2 and bc2 open additional ports themselves for online play now black ops, homefront and crysis 2 do not. I wonder if this is bad network coding or something that has changed since the ps3 anti hacking update

Nat types have nothing to do with lag they re used to connect players together. A mod or strict nat type should only effect party connections and server connections. The lag problems in this game are to do with latency issues that need to be addressed before any dlc's are released

I was under the impression that people with Open nat can connect to anyone, people with moderate can connect to people with modertate and open, and people with strict can only connect with people who are open (not other people with strict and mod)

So logically while it doesn't affect lag directly, if your nat prevents you from connecting to some players, it reduces the player base you can connect with and then reduces number of people you may have otherwise had a good connection to(low ping)

if i'm completely wrong no doubt someone will politely correct me

Basically everyone should either have nat 1 or 2 if you have nat 3 then youll have connection issues. Both nat 1 and 2 are open nat types the only difference between 2 is that it is through a router. The different versions of nat so open, moderate and strict can be had regardless of whether you have nat 1,2,3. Your routers firewall decides which ports are allowed to be forwarded to your ps3 you need port 3658 i believe for your ps3 to gain a nat type 2 which means youll have no connection issues online. Port 3658 is the ps3's communication port which allows you to talk to other players online, so people with strict nat types ( type 3 ) normally getting problems with mics and connecting to other peoples parties. Even you have a strict nat type through a nat 2 connection you should get many problems.

The nat versions open, moderate and strict are game specific and give an overall connection strength of the nat you actually have. So nat 2 moderate. Means the ps3 has allowed the open port and the strength of the connection is moderate. Open is obviously the best, but the others should not effect gaming provided you have a nat.

The different types my prevent you from speaking to people with different nats but you should still be able to connect to them all the same. Think of it as a quality of communication for mics, where stricts may only talk to stricts and vice versa same goes for connections as you said.

Also alot of new releases Black ops, homfront and crysis 2 dont open additional ports to allow for an open nat type in game. Mw2 did port 3074 as did battlefield port 10000. Lazy coding or networking problems? who knows !!!

Hope that helps
