Nausea caused by running

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 1:05 pm

I've been having this issue the past months. To begin with, I have always been playing sports (more specifically football or soccer if you like), so exercising and working out have always been natural for me. Now as I said earlier I've encountered a strange problem, and it is bothering me because I've not had this problem before.

Whenever I do endurance training (for example running on a threadmill) everything goes well and all, but after a while (normally 25-30 minutes) I suddenly get nauseaous and feel like I could throw up any minute. Needless to say I have to stop running and go home instead resting as it doesn't go away for one hour or so. The strange thing is that is has nothing to do with me being tired, I feel like I could go on forever, but this annoying reaction my body gets is interupting my workout session, leaving me frustrated.

Now for the potential reasons/causes, I don't know if most of this has anything to do with it, but some of these reasons may be the cause:

I have in the last 6 months been losing alot of weight, not for health reasons (somewhat, I'll come back to it) but rather for having the wrong diet. I never eat breakfast or lunch (due to lazyness), this is something I'm working on to improve, but eating breakfast have never been something I've made a habit of (except from when I was a kid of course and my mother made breakfast for me). I struggle to believe that is the major reason though, because I've been fine earlier, and I usually eat something before I go work out so I have some energy to consume.

One of the reasons why I've lost some weight is because I've been practising and "preparing" for eventually joining a football team again in one of the norwegian divisions, plus that I'm joining the army later this year, so I have to be in good shape. I was never in "really bad shape", but I decided to lose some body mass for the purpuse of focusing solely on endurance and agility instead of building muscle mass and strength. I am now very light (45 pounds or 20KG below the average norwegian, but I'm also shorter than average so bear that in mind), and I'm wondering if this sudden weight loss may be one of the reasons behind this. Perhaps my body was used to having more weight to carry etc, and now it's still not completely used to maintain the same type of workout causing me to get nauseaous. If this happens to be the reason I'm expecting this to go over by itself, and eventually it will adapt and I'll be fine again. Maybe I'm simply pushing my body to hard. I have no plan on gaining weight again so suggesting that will not help me, I'm very happy and see alot of benefitional improvements etc when I do physical activities and it fits my type of play better when I play football (soccer).

I would love to get some input from you guys if you know anything about this or have any ideas what's wrong. I would hate to join the army/football team/whatever having this problem around me, and I would love to see this go away!

Thank you for reading.

Seems you already know what is wrong. As far as I see it your problem lies with your diet. You need to eat more. I myself feel the same if I work out when I haven't been eating properly. Have a good breakfeast and have something light before working out. I myself had a habit of having toast with no butter but slices of banana on it + a glass of chocolate milk (nesquick) for breakfeast and then before working out I'd buy and eat an apple.

Of course this isn't anything that can't see large improvements, this is just what I felt was appropriate to my own tastes and to the low level of my own exercising. But the harder you work out the better a breakfeast you should have but keep anything you eat just before working out light or your stomach will get to you.

Edit: Oh and starving yourself in any way is never good for you. If you wish to improve your endurance and agility don't change your diet but change your workout schedule. I myself used to be in gymnastics and some of the exercises I took there were entwined with the exercises of those more specifically in rythmic gymnastics. Work outs where you stretch your body a lot while excerting minimal force and exercises in speed are good for your purposes. But I probably don't have to tell you that in any detail, just take good care of your diet and eat well :)

Don't worry I haven't been intentionally starving myself  It's more of a side-effect from my lack of food-intake. I don't often feel hungry so eating feels more like a routine than an actual necessity for me, and that is a issue I'm working on solving (unless it's dinner, I love dinner).

I like what you're saying Ellert, I've started eating something before I leave to train aswell. I'm not very picky when it comes to eating food for the sole purpose of energy gain, so I usually just eat whatever I come across, be it a apple, slice of bread with something etc.. (don't take me wrong I love food with a PASSION!)

Toast with sliced banana sounds nice, it also seems like a small but nutritious meal. I'll have to be better at preparing food, so any suggestion is good (wheter you meant is at a suggestion or not)

I got that when I first started running. I actually DID throw up several times. I always ate ginger candy when I ran after that to settle the stomach. Strong stuff, really spicy, but you'll learn to love it when it keeps you from feeling bad while running.

As for eating I'm sure you know that this is something that needs to be changed. Running burns a lot of calories, much much MUCH more than weight training or really any other excercise (except for maybe intense swimming).

Apples and bananas won't cut it. You need polysaccharides, complex carbohydrates. Starches! Eat rice, oatmeal (the best breakfast), pasta, even cereal. If you are burning enough calories you won't gain weight from it, plain and simple. If you are starving yourself AND burning calories then you're just going to feel bad all the time.

I'm not a stranger to ginger, I've used it as a cure to my motion-sickness while travelling.

I understand that I need to eat lots of food, but I'm no big eater so I try to aim for food with more calories. As for your last sentence Steampunk: I now realise that I've been kinda starving myself, but I've never felt or intended that way. I try to do my best when it comes to being healthy, but I've never been good when it comes to providing the amounts of energy required to perform my physical training. I need to start eating more, wheter I like it or not.

I've got some packs of noodles in the kitchen which I hate, but it's probably as close as it gets to "pasta", maybe I should start eating that along with some other stuff before training. Oatmeal is also fine, altough I haven't been eating that for a long time.

If you are burning enough calories you won't gain weight from it,
I know this, but it's not something I'm thinking of though. I'm good at losing weight, but I'm not very good at gaining it back, unless I start wrecking my body by eating lots of junk, which I never do. :)

I got nauseous yesterday, I chased the bus at 7AM when all I had was two slices of bread, with some jam and butter - not enough energy to be running roughly 400m because the driver wouldn't open the doors when stopped at the lights. Felt sick for hours after it.

Okay so a small update. I started eating 2 slices of bread with chocolate spread and a apple every morning before hitting the gym. I'm quite aware that it isn't the healthiest of meals, but I've got to say that I'm not nauseous anymore. It seems like a calori-rich breakfast and it has helped me and my body push forward at the gym.

There are probably way better meals than that though, so I might consider changing it eventually.

I find I function best when I have eggs for breakfast. I pretty much always have scrambled eggs with cheese, and a coffee, then run about half an hour after that. We had no eggs at one point so I had some cheap supermarket muesli instead. Felt horrible about ten minutes into my run and not so good once I was finished. Try avoid breakfast food that's mostly built up with sugar.

As for the pasta suggestion, that would be easy. All you need is one tin of pasta sauce and some pasta. Boil pasta, simmer the sauce, combine, done. Or baked beans on toast. Also quick and easy.

I'm not planning on watching it. That's one of the shows that I dislike, but not hate. It's similar to how I feel about South Park, Beavis and Butthead, and Last Call With Carson Daily.
