Navmesh and water questions

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 3:07 am

The Wiki isn't really clear on this, so before I spend alot of time on something I may have to redo, I would like to ask:

I have a mine shaft with water at the bottom. It has an exit ramp-type thingy if anyone falls in. My question is, how much of the bottom do I navmesh? Everything anyone can reach? Or just where I want them to go? (If I mesh everywhere, would it take longer for an NPC to find their way out of the water? If I don't mesh everywhere, will they get stuck without instructions?)

Also, I have a good bit of debris at the bottom (rocks and stuff) - should I mesh over it or under it? Some of my points seem to go under certain decorations and over others (auto-genned ones, I mean).

And while I know how to cycle through the different navmesh views, is there a way to turn off the water so I can see my contours easier?

Thanks for looking! :)

try opening up one of the dungeons with water in it and see how they set it up.

my guess is you probably dont have to navmesh the water basin (only up until they start to swim) and definitely dont go underneath any rocks

as for the water toggle, you can go to view > show/hide window

theres a check box for water

You should navmesh the bottom of the water area, then toggle water on the triangles that are actually underwater. I'm not sure exactly how the game will treat it, but every lake on the exteriors is navmeshed underwater so I'd say yours should be to. Navmesh bug not withstanding.

K thanks guys, that's what I've been doing. I have been looking at other dungeons, that's how I got to the asking questions point - I was confuzzed. For instance, Blackreach's water is sometimes designated blue (water tri) or red (land tri). I thought that it was because of the depth, but that wasn't always the case. I thought that I would only have to designate water triangles where the water was swimming depth (after looking at Eldergleam and Broken Oar Grotto), but the autogen puts it right to the water line. So do I gotta or no?

This is a tiny little area I'm doing right now, but these questions will become more important to me later on other projects, so thanks for your time!

And thank you Amethyst for the view thingy, I've been pulling my hair out cause I knew I'd seen it somewhere. Seems obvious in retrospect, some days I'm an idiot.....

I have been designating underwater triangles, trying to mke sure none go above the water line, and no land triangles go below it. Then I look at places like Blackreach and wonder if it matters. I just don't know how precise I have to be - I can't go by Blackreach's water because I remember so many problems I had with followers in the water in that area.

If anyone could clarify what purpose designating a water triangle specifically serves, I think I could figure things out from there. Is it swimming depth? Or does a water surface confuse the AI so we just need to tell them where to go? If so, do I need water trangles in non-swimming areas? Or can I just leave them red?

Thanks again for looking! :)

Well, I've learned alot about navmeshing today as I accidentally reset my nearly-completed navmesh (I had a couple of problem areas, so I saved my mod and ran an auto-gen again to see what I could change, and accidentally saved that! Ack!) However, I'd still like to have someone answer my questions, as my water navmesh looks like hell and anyone who falls in certain areas can't get out. It's a small area to begin with, and I'm getting flustered. Thanks!
