Yes, there's a point to them, they provide world depth, NCR is trying to convert to paper money like America before the war, and the Legion uses gold and silver coins like the Romans did.

It's a shame not more was done with it really because i was under the impression that they'd be just as important as caps.

Technically, they are, since they have a unique trade value that doesnt rely on your barter skill. If you kill Legionairres and take only their Denarius, then you can rake in qutie a few caps alone.

Faction money is for piling all over your bed so you can roll around in it. Doing the same with bottlecaps would be kind of painful and isn't as visually impressive, after all.

I do that all the time, it's all fun and games until I swallow a rusty bottlecap. Those ridges tear my intestinal lining, then I got lockjaw, oh man, it was horrible.

You're obviously unaware how painful papercuts are.

What's the point of Legion currency?

To sit down at a ammo press bench and make little deadly disk shotshells out of them, gaining the same effects as magnum shotshells but without the extra wear and tear. The best solution to the Legion problem is to literally throw money at the problem.

What's the point of NCR currency?

To use as a substitute for toilet paper.

That be expensive toilet paper, a single $5 note is still worth two caps. Pre-war money on the other hand comes in stacks of about one hundred for $10 caps, adjusted for barter. Much better deal.
*The iconic wad of cash you see in the film, is one hundred bills bundled together, thus I assume a stack of pre-war money is the same way.
