NCR because they are all over the Mojave while Kings are only in Freeside. Better yet why not settle things with words and have a good rep with both?

You can 'talk' things out between the NCR, and the king. This will complete The Kings' quest while not affecting ur NCR rep.
Funny I just did this last night, without ever considering hurting my NCR or King rep,

FO New Vegas gives the option to settle things with words for almost every quest. As long as the person is not hostile right away chances are there is a speech check to talk your way out of combat.

The kings are going to lose that shoot out.
Spoiler
Go to the NCR behind that wooden tower and talk to the one in charge, get her to not shoot the kings. The kings along with Pacer will back off.

Oh I forgot to add you have to be unarmed. One of them tells you but it can be missed if you run up to them. So unarm and walk slowly to them.

Yes it takes us "action gamers" a while to adjust. You'll get there. :D

You are too late, the "talk-it-out" option takes place before the shootout.
Spoiler
you have to do the "optional" talk to Julie Farkas thing before meeting that lady at the abandoned store
