Is it necessary for me to use Wrye Bash and create a bashed

Post » Mon Aug 20, 2012 6:35 am

I'm using SkyRe, Cloaks, Immersive Armor, and the Monster Mod... All of which I'm sure mess with the leveled lists.

Can I use these all together just using NMM? Or do I have to go through the process of using Wrye Bash?

Thanks guys!

Strictly speaking you don't "need" a bashed patch, but I suspect Cloaks and Immersive Armor overwrite some of the same lists, so that would skew the likelihood of finding specific items in favor of whichever ESP is loaded last. Also, I'm reasonably to entirely sure there's a patch for making Immersive Armor and SkyRe work well together; I'd make sure you have that (and if you do a bashed patch shouldn't alter those two mods playing together at all). I always recommend using a bashed patch, but in all honesty it's much less necessary nowadays than it used to be for Oblivion.

If two mods edit the same list, the mod loaded last wins. So if you want the edits from more than one mod, you will need to create a Bashed Patch.

Note that Wrye Bash does not magically scan your mods to see which one needs merging
Scrap that. Merging is done automatically. Relevelling and removing entries is not however! You will have to add certain Bash Tags to the mod description for that, BOSS is also able to apply Bash Tags.
You can read more about tags in the docs that come with Wrye Bash.

Give it some time. Skyrim's record structure has not been decoded completely yet.

Much less necessary now, but give it a year and you won't be able to play a modded Skyrim without Wrye Bash.

Actually, for leveled lists it does.

For merging, but for anything beyond that it does not. My bad. I have corrected my original post to reflect that.

Thanks for the tips guys!

I'm also using Dawnguard if that matters at all.

I may look into it but I was hoping the bashed patch wouldn't be necessary.

Oh yeah, I have no doubt, but since the poster is asking a question in the present, I think it's fair to say Bash is currently optional.

Dawnguard shouldn't effect your need for it at all. If you think you're going to continue adding armour and weapon mods (and creature mods and all that fun stuff) to the game in the future, I'd encourage you to get Wrye bash now (especially since it uses an easy installer these days), but if the mods you listed are really the only content you're adding, I think you could survive without it. That said, there's a chance a lot of NPC's will spawn with cloaks but no new armor or vice versa, but If that happens you can always just download Bash at a later time.

If you are using more than one mod that affects levelled lists and you want all the added items to show up in-game (rather than just those from the mod that loads last), then yes.

You might as well learn to use it now so you know how it works when you need it.

Also, if the prospect of learning to use it seems daunting, just use it to do that one specific thing, and use your usual tools for everything else.
I.e. install Bash, go to the Mods tab, create a Bashed Patch, activate it, and shut Bash down again.
You'd need to repeat this only if you're adding a mod using leveled lists again. Bash doesn't come with a legally binding contract to use all of its features or none. :D

Wrye Bash is the essential tool for any serious mod user. Bashed Patches are essential now to use multiple content mods together without any conflicts, with SkyRe, Morrowloot, SkyMonster Mod, Immersive Armors, Cloaks, etc. to all work nicely together Bashed Patch is essential.

Simple, load Bash, right click Bashed Patch, 0.esp, make sure only Leveled Lists is ticked, then Build patch. That's it, couldn't be simpler.

But it also makes things like manual sorting and checking saves much easier than any other tool.

Actually it is fully decoded now (except NAVI and NAVM records).
