Need advice on creating a job resume.

I know how to make a resume, the problem is that I have a very skimpy work history because I have essentially been in school forever. So right now I have dont have a reliable work history. My resume looks kinda bare. Really all I have is my college education, and I was wandering if you all had some suggestions for how I could dress it up a little better, or make it look more complete.

Leave out all that work and school stuff, nobody likes a show-off.

Really though, not having a work history isn't a problem, as long as you were doing something, like school, volunteering, starting your own business. As long as you can come up with a reasonable explanation for why you weren't at work and what you were doing. For instance, many people know the economy is bad, and you might not have worked in the last year. But since you were in school that's a fairly good alibi.

Of course, I've heard some places who won't hire people unless they already have a job, don't try and explain that logic to me, and I'm fairly sure it's discrimination.

Yeah I've come across "1 year experience needed" so many times it's stupid. I can't get a job because I need experience but can't experience I can't a job. :banghead: the evil catch 22.

Pretty much every job ever in my town needs the 1 year experience thing, except for places like Burger King and other low jobs. But the cost to commute is greater than what I would be earning, even with several pay raises. So I have essentially never had a job. Weee, go me. Fortunately I did get a little windfall to keep me afloat with more to come, and I have plans to invest it in a way for me to make some money. Just a matter of playing the [censored] waiting game.

* Requirements listed for job applications are purposefully inflated to root out people who aren't sure if they can do the job. If you don't ding on every point don't worry about it, what matters is that you know you can handle the job you are applying for.

* Find out as much about the company you are applying for as you can and figure out what the best way is to deliver your application. For a rather small company you can deliver the resume in person and make a (hopefully) first good impression, obviously this usually won't work for big corporations.

* A good picture in which you look sympathetic, can't stress this enough. If you have to decide between two people that are fairly equal in their application, the one with the more sympathetic picture wins.

* Give the resume some simplistic styling. Nothing over the top, but a few well placed black/blue/grey lines can already make your resume look more interesting than if it's just a bland white piece of paper.

* And look http://lifehacker.com/5777317/top-10-ways-to-rock-your-resume for some more good tips on writing your resume.

My frist resume was short too. One tip I got was to expand on your education. You could list a few important/relevant to the job classes you took and a brief explanation of them.
