Need help with FPS.

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:35 am

Well, I'll be straight to the point when I'm in the game and just causally standing, with no one around, and I'm not moving at all, the maximum Frames Per Second I am getting is between 20-24. Whenever I'm running around it's about 10-15 FPS. When I'm on a load screen the max is about 5-10 FPS. And when firing a weapon 10-15 FPS. In shorter terms my game isn't getting over 25 FPS and I'd like to know how to fix it.

Yes, I have tried both d3d9.dll files (the ATI version and NVidia) and neither have worked. It seems nothing has worked so far so I've already accepted having to upgrade my computer, I just need to know what to upgrade.

Here's my DXDIAG.

You have too little RAM, too few CPU cores, and way too much background clutter being loaded when Windows starts. You cannot expect much better with your current setup.

Minimum System Requirements (VGAs corrected for Obsidian stupidity):

* Windows XP/Vista/Win7
* 1GB System RAM (XP)/ 2GB System RAM (Vista)
* 2.0 Ghz Dual Core processor
* Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 256MB RAM
(NVIDIA 6800 "GS" or better/ ATI X1300XT or better)
{Added my note here, the X1600 Pro & up really, and
avoid both the Geforce 6800 SE, and the 6800 XT}
* 10 GBs of free hard drive space

Well, if you're strapped for cash, there's a couple things you can do to increase performance:

As usual - If you are uncomfortable with the process of upgrading a system, don't do it. If you know someone who can do it, ask them, and they may help.

Get on MSI's website and look up the motherboard. You'll find a spec sheet detailing what CPUs are supported on the board. NOTE: You may need a BIOS update as well. Then, check on ebay for one of the supported CPU's. When I upgraded my brothers' Dell late last year before building him a new rig, dual core 2.6Ghz Athlons were going for 30 bucks. Granted, these were socket AM2. The CPU upgrade alone in his computer was amazing, and increased his entire system performance greatly. He went from a single core 2GHz Athlon.

Get more RAM. Windows XP 32-bit has a limitation of 3.5GB of RAM. Most people using XP have no problems playing games on 2GB. You can find RAM for relatively cheap brand new, or get on ebay and find a cheap deal. Just make sure it's compatible for your system.

And yes, clean out your system of all the resource hogging junk. You don't need most of that loading when Windows does anyway.

If done right, you can upgrade to get playable performance for about 60 bucks. The 4600 cards (4650 or 4670) generally come with 512mb of video RAM, and you'll see decent performance with a resolution of 1024x768 with high settings, or 1280x1024 with medium settings. Better than what you have now, anyways. I hth.

Okay, thanks for the help. I'll look into that stuff, I only have around about $110-$150 to spend on this stuff so which one of the upgrades you listed would increase my FPS the most. I'm thinking about getting a new graphics card but I'm just going to get what will get my FPS up for now, so what would be best for me to get for the time being?

Okay, thanks for the help. I'll look into that stuff, I only have around about $110-$150 to spend on this stuff so which one of the upgrades you listed would increase my FPS the most. I'm thinking about getting a new graphics card but I'm just going to get what will get my FPS up for now, so what would be best for me to get for the time being?

My opinion - go for another 1 Gb of RAM, and clean up your Windows installation to get rid of the unnecessary resource-hogging junk. The CPU will bottleneck most any good graphics card.

First off, if there really is any reason to hold onto the main system board in that PC, yes, add the RAM. IMO, the loss of some performance for a card such as an HD 5670 wouldn't be as critical as the potential improvement, but if the MB would accept a dual core CPU, and there was also one actually available, even an X2 4200 would be a healthy improvement, but all in all, I don't think the system really has much in the way of legs to take it too much farther. For instance, whether or not the MB is new enough to have PCIe video, and even be able to upgrade to an HD 5670 hasn't been confirmed so far.

How would I clean up the Windows installation, or the CPU to get rid of the stuff that's taking up resources and that I don't need? I downloaded something called Game Booster which stops all computer processes that are unnecessary to have running for when I have a game running. When I have it running it says it has stopped around 40 processes so I think that may be what you're talking about. Do you think that just getting a new graphics card will help? I've been looking at the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 or the GeForce GTX 460. Do you think that just getting one of those will get my Frame Rate up to at least 30?

I agree, but the poster mentioned he had a tight budget, and my suggestion was intended to allow him to get the most bang for his buck given that.

Honestly, you'd just be wasting your money putting that much card into that system - the rest of the system would be a major bottle neck. And does your motherboard even have the PCI-Express slot it needs to take that card?

The problem is, your computer is just barely up to playing this game, and even then you're going to get laggy performance in busy areas, and you're probably going to have to turn your video settings way down. Your best bet would be a complete new gaming PC, but from your post you don't have the $600 - $700 (a little less if you can find good deals) it'd take to put one together. That price would include that GTS 450 or GTX 460 you have your eyes on.

If you really can't afford to spend more that what you said, I'd upgrade the RAM, use Game Booster and limp along on that until you can save up the money to buy yourself a new computer.

Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that I do have a pretty old, and crappy computer. Oh well, I saw on Alienware's website that I can get an M15x laptop for around $35-$40 a month, so I'll probably just look into getting one of those, but thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it. :goodjob:
