Found this possible solution doing a google search:

27# Skyrim Crashes at Logo
Try verifying your game cache and uninstall FFDshow if you have it installed in your OS. If it still doesn’t fix, run the game in compatibility with Vista SP2. You can run it in compatibility mode by right clicking the Skyrim executable > Click Compatibility Tab > and choose Vista SP2 from drop down menu and Apply.

I don't think it's a Windows XP fix you need, seeing I'm running the game in Windows XP and haven't suffered from any crash to a black screen with the Skyrim logo. It's more likely it's a driver issue or maybe a codec issue.

Is a single-core CPU even supported? Pentium 4 is below minimum specs...

Many people in another thread have been able to stop this crash by doing a sampling rate fix in the audio section of the control panel. There is no way to do this in XP from what i can tell, thats all i need.

Its a realtek card. Drivers are updated.
Also, as for the CPU, it beats the minimum of 2ghz it has about 2.93ghz (i usually round up to 3)

Do you have an old soundblaster laying around that's incapable of doing 192Khz?

surely there must be an easier fix in xp's control panel somewhere. seems alot of work to try install a new soundcard on the off chance it might work.
