NEEDING to use a torch or nighteye

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:30 pm

You should have to use a torch or night eye unless you turn up the brightness... i loved playing with the brightness on default....

what i do in Oblivion is enchant a helmet with Light... not a bad idea... its like having a miner's helmet almost :P

Let's be honest, who really needed to use nigheye or a torch in Oblivion? I think some areas in Skyrim should be so dark that you absolutely need a torch or nigheye spell to see anything. In Morrowind and Oblivion, I don't I ever had to use to nighteye or a torch. A torch was basically useless in Oblivion and Morrowind. Another suggestion to make the torch more useful, how about the torch can actually be used as a weapon? Of course using it as a weapon will make the flame go out or cause you to loose it. It would also be cool to use a torch set the enviorment on fire making it dangerous to enemies. And how about there being animations when you or a NPC is set on fire like screaming and flailing your arms around. It would be cool to see a spider give out a terrible shreek when you set it on fire or set its nest on fire.

I used Illusions Starlight spell, illuminating with a green light is so BA :hubbahubba:

What? The game was too dark some times....

...wait, I think the lack of light in ALL buildings in Fallout is just getting to me.

I just hope I get to see some interiors.

I'm not sure is any of you have played Amnesia: The dark decent. But it pulls this off batter than any game I've ever played and its indie.
Beth should really use the same mechanics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZSlbtGIppc
You need the Lamp and if you are in the dark, your eyes do adjust but just like they would IRL.

This was exactly what I was thinking and was just reading through the replies to see if anyone said it already. I agree 100% Beth should handle dungeon lighting almost exactly like Amnesia. The only light should come directly from sources such as fire or flame atronach's, or things that glow. No light entities placed around the map to light it up. Lit or unlit torches are fine, but no random lighting please. And for the people who have a hard time seeing or are afraid of the dark, you can always adjust the gamma.

If an item is in the game and has a purpose then there should be a NEED to use that item. I can't remember ever NEEDING to use a torch in Oblivion, if I did it was pretty rare. I remember using some torches in Morrowind though. My point is: no more useless items and that includes torches!

Skyrim is a more rugged place and much less Tolkien than Oblivion and it has dynamic lighting on everything so it's very possible to see darker caves and ruins. It helps us tactical stealth players who like to stick to the shadows and scout the area and devise a plan to take out the army of monsters 1 by 1 in the safest manner. I want more to fear.

I have to use torches in some places in Oblivion... my TV and eyesight svck :( (I even whack the brightness right up and still can't see lol)

No problems with it getting darker though, I kind of enjoy that with my sneaky characters I have to decide whether to run in virtually blind or sacrifice a sneak attack with a torch if I don't have any nighteye or detect life potions.

How about giving torches health like all weapons, and have that health slowly decrease while having it equipped, and tearing away a piece of health everytime you hit someone(thing) with it?

Well in the 360 version you needed a torch or night eye in ruins to be able to see half the time. The PC version however was too light, so I modded out all the ambient light in dungeons so that it was as dark as the 360s, pitch black where it is supposed to be. However, I couldn't get night as dark as I wanted, could never get the shaders to work just right. Oh well, I just hope that Skyrim has extremely dark nights and dungeons.

This is right....when i played assassin characters, one of the first things i did was get a nighteye spell.
It seemed alot darker on 360,so light, nighteye spells, and torches were needed.

Dark nights, dark caves and droppable torches please! And I agree 100% with the guy above who thinks NPCs should also be affected by the dark (and presumably carry a torch). It would be awesome to arrow-snipe at torchlight in the night... muahahaa.

Darker dungeons in appropriate places (I want quite a few bright and shiny ones too if logics suggests it). Torches should be as good as a medium light spell, making them useful and desired, where beginners light spell is only an emergency thing when you're out of torches. Combine with constant drain or no regen, and magic isn't something you fire off indiscriminately anymore. Night eye could also depend on power and gradually go from normal sight to full night vision. I'd also want to throw heat vision into the mix.

Just a question. How are you supposed to get out of a dungeon if you run out of light sources and have no spells?

Hm, dunno, I did need to use a torch or Night-Eye in caves and some Ayleid ruins  Maybe it's cause I didn't go overboard on the gamma setting? I'd just like them to remove the blue tint from Night Eye.

Agreed, but torches should also light up a bigger area and nighteye needs to change, like in the way Fallout new vegas has a perk for night eye, I think that worked very well. Also, khajiits should have auto nighteye when it becomes dark. In oblivion it was terrible.. In the same way argonians water breathing was terrible in morrowind...

I like the idea of having to use a light source, especially in dungeons.

One of my favorite tricks was to always enchant myself a glowing shield. Not sure why, but it was always a shield.

then you die. jk

night eye should be in the game i just wish it had a small downside to it. i just have a huge issue with spells in TES games making other skills like lockpicking and making potions irrelevant. personally the shaders i used to replace the awful blue in vanilla werent as bad to look at but it annoyed you if you did it for more than a few minutes at a time. i think they were made by timeslip.............the one i picked had blurry edges and any lightsources you encountered were really bright.........i actually squinted at my screen. it made night eye usable in emergencies or if i wanted to be stealthy but if i was just traveling by foot at night (darker nights mod) or in a cave that i had cleaned out and was just exploring then using a torch or a ring enchanted with light were much better alternatives. i hope they dont use that horrible blue shader again. its not so much the color cause i could tolerate the night eye in dark messiah easier.

I suppose they could just place torches in barrels in really dark places - if you've got no light source at all, it would mean scrabbling around to find a container. That's all I can think of anyway. It could be a good way of making sure that your character is always prepared before dungeon diving.

I fully agree. I've never needed to use a torch or night eye since I always carry an object with a Light spell.

YES!

I always had to decrease the brightness because everything was so damn bright. And then the outside world would look weird when dungeons finally became dark enough.
Dungeons should be dark.

You use a basic projectile spell (like the firebolt every character got in Oblivion) to illuminate one corridor at a time and find your way out.

You could still just wait a bit for magicka to regenerate, or hope that your few fireballs illuminated a container which has a torch in it.
