Neighbors are such a pain

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:14 pm

Bought my house not quite two years ago and the nice old man next door had two little yappy Chihuahuas that belonged to his late wife. Another family member passed away about a year ago and he took her Chihuahua in and the first of the year his great-niece moved in with yet another Chihuahua (weird). Now he has four of the little rat dogs barking non stop. They only saving grace is he brings them in at night. He also took in from another relative a cat who comes in my back yard to crap in my flower beds and spray everything in sight marking its territory. All the furniture on my patios reeks of cat piss. Now yet another relative has given him a Macaw which is kept in his backyard all day to screech and talk (loudly). Every pet his his extended family doesn't want gets dumped on him (and he's too nice to say no).

Its not just him - almost every house on the street has at least two to three dogs (the people on the other side of the Chihuahua man have FIVE Yorkshire Terriers!). On a nice day when the windows are open it sounds like I'm living in the middle of a dog kennel or the SPCA. Its just bad luck I guess - I've never lived in a neighborhood like this. Usually every other house has one dog, maybe two in the other developments I've lived in. Makes me think about selling and buying a place on an acre or two a few miles out of town!

O.K., I'm done venting about clueless neighbors and their obnoxious pets! :shakehead: It begs the question though, is America getting more dog-crazy? I rented an apartment for several years so I hadn't lived in a single family home area in a decade or so before this. I just don't remember my old neighborhood being this bad back in the late 90s. I think some people are using them as a substitute for children.

I would just call animal control or something. And five dogs? I thought there was some sort of limit here in California.

You could probably call the cops if they're that loud. Most localities have noise ordinances.

You need to organise a pet barbecue. You know it makes sense.

I think the worst thing we had here was a really aggressive dog (a poodle of all things!) which I think was becoming neurotic since the teenager who'd been tasked with walking it couldn't be bothered and just let it run round the street unsupervised a couple of times a week. Soon after someone had a talk with his father, the dog disappeared, hopefully to a home where someone would actually take proper care of it.

Pet explosion? Hope you had your doors and windows closed :P

But yes, it is a pain to have a dog constantly barking at neighbour. Especially if you live in an apartment building. Gladly the one i live in has no loud dogs, Only noise is caused by drunks playing music very loudly :hehe: But that happens only every two weeks or so, and they have stopped doing it troughout the night. Life is good ^_^

Upon looking it up

Barking Dogs: Any pet owner or custodian who allows a dog to bark continuously or for an extended period of time in a manner that annoys the neighbors and disturbs the peace and tranquillity of the neighborhood may be guilty of allowing a public nuisance and punishable by a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $1000 and/or six months in jail. (California Penal Code 373A and L.A. County Code Sec. 10.40.065) If you have a noise complaint, contact your local Department of Animal Care and Control agency or submit an Animal Complaint Form.

Read this for the birds, because there are restrictions on parrots, but I don't know why.

Where I live, there's a limit for 4 dogs in residential areas.

Though I understand as my neighbors on one side have/had 4 dachshunds, a dalmation, a white shepherd, and some sort of little white mutt. They're down to 3 dachshunds as the shepherd and dalmation passed away and 1 dachshund and the white mutt thing moved. But omg, noisy dogs!

My other neighbor has 3 rat dogs and 4 "wild"/outside cats that like to use my garden as a potty. (HATE those cats!) And yet another neighbor actually brings their dog into my yard to crap and then leaves the piles here. I've started to pick it up and throw it in their yard though... maybe they'll get the hint. hehe

Irresponsible pet owners ruin it for the rest of us.

Yorkshire Terriers

I hate, hate---HATE these damn dogs. All they do non-stop is bark, Chihuahua's I'm not a huge fan of. I don't hate them but I don't like 'em either.

Buy an eagle, it would likely kill and eat the chihuahua's. Then release it, the old man will never know...

I live a few miles out of town on a 16-acre piece of land (FREEDOM!) so neighbor troubles are almost non-existent here.

On the other hand, I have a rather crappy internet connection way out here, so I guess life has a way of balancing itself out...

Some neighbours where I used to live owned a couple of these creatures. Horrid little ankle-biters, they were. Though as with the poodle, I suspect the problem was neglect: I've seen quite a few Yorkshire terriers around over the years but they've mostly been good-natured.

I know what you mean OP. My mother and step-father have 4 dogs. They started off with one Yorkshire that they bought 5 years ago. My step-dad also has had his Border Collie for 10 years. Then he decides to buy a Yorkie-Poodle mix, then a year later he comes home with a Pomeranian

Sometimes they all start barking and it will go on for awhile. Especially when I'm walking downstairs to my kitchen or to go outside. We have 2 cats as well. I took my brothers cat when he went to jail and my mom adopted a female cat to give my cat a friend. I'm a cat person by all means.

My cat was found as a stray by my older brother, so he has a few battle scars. He's the coolest cat.

Oh god....neighbors and their pets. I have a similar issue only it's with cats. And I love cats. But these neighbors, who moved in after we did, started with 5+ outdoor cats. They refuse to spay/neuter so at least one of them has a litter every year seems like, once under our bushes. The males spray around the door and elsewhere semi-regularly. There's now at least 8 (plus some other neighbor cats) and they pee/poo in our yard constantly. If you walk by their house it smells like a catbox all the way out to the sidewalk. They also have two small dogs and two large outdoor cages of parakeets.

I can accept a little wandering pet poop in the yard, and I've tried things like putting large rocks/pebbles around the dirt that borders the actual house perimeter, but it's so bad that we pretty much gave up on the yard until they move away (they rent, so we figure they will move long before we do).

There are technically laws about how many pets you can own, but even if you complain I think it's pretty rare anything is actually done about it unless there's animal abuse going on. At least in neighborhoods where people own houses (vs. condo rules).

As to dogs...there are probably more dog owners in our neighbor area than cats, but they're all pretty quiet. Hardly ever hear them. I only know of them because they're always walking by our house...and the owners seem pretty good about cleaning up after them. No dog poop on the sidewalk etc.

Certain times of the year, yup.

My sister-in-law used to trap her neighbors cats and take them to the shelter. But she knew they were chipped so the shelter would call the owner...eventually the owner learned to keep the cats inside. Sadly, I'm not that mean. I have thought about trapping the females to get them spayed, tho....sigh.

I only have one cat, and I keep her indoors at all times.

Two animals is my limit, and if I got a second pet it would be another cat.

Had a person who kept many birds in their backyard as far as I know they got rid of them due to noise complaints.

Just tell your neighbors that you used rat poision in your garden and that the dogs should better stay away from it.

I died a bit inside when I read the tags.

All I can say about dogs, is that I am a mailman. I know what it feels like to have annoying dogs around barking and trying to kill you.

We get that too.

I've always kept my cats indoors...a personal preference. I don't mind if neighbors have an outdoor cat or two, but it's when you add up those plus some idiot who has a whole block's worth of them that I get annoyed. Like I said, I love cats, have all my life, but in city areas where people/yards are crammed together sometimes I think they should be indoor only pets. Dogs at least don't climb fences and make it so you feel like you can't walk around in your own backyard without stepping on something. :swear:
