New BSA format?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:20 pm

Are the BSAs for New Vegas of a new format? When I attempt to open them with FOMM from Fallout 3, the app doesn't recognize them.

I'm sincerely hoping they're not encrypted and are just using a different manner of compression. Please tell me they're not encrypted. If they are, what a way to shoot the mod community in the foot.

People have already opened up the BSAs and looked through them. I don't know why FOMM can't do it, but BSA Commander was able to get it open, according to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122265-initial-technical-details/.

I opened them using FOMM version 12.5

Heheh... I made the mistake of trying to crack the BSAs open by just firing up Steam. Didn't know I had to start the game up first... :whistling:

Which version of BSA Commander did you use. I'm using 0.98.2, and every time I try and open one of them I get a "Loadingf FAILED" dialogue box popping up.

Did you use the GUI or the command line to unpack them?

Edit:
Nevermind. I just found this information on LHammonds Fallout3 Nexus download page for the utility:

NOTE: This tool was designed for use with Oblivion BSA files. It will work with Fallout 3 but only after you use a hex editor and change the file version.

Excerpt from No Mutants Allowed web site:

QUOTE
To open them with BSA Commander you have to do the following:

- Backup the original .bsa file
- Open it in a hex editor
- Change byte 5 from 68 to 67
- Save and open in BSA Commander

I was trying to use the copy of BSA Commander I had from my Oblivion days, so I never saw that message.

I recommend using FOMM's BSA Extractor to view BSAs from FNV, FO3, and Oblivion.

I am using a custom BSA made using the FOMM BSA Tools which has the same filename as the esp i tied it to.
It works great in Fallout: NV.

I've had no prob poking about in the New Vegas BSA either.
