New Elder Scrolls player! Which race should I choose?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 7:52 am

Hey everyone, this will be my first time playing an Elder Scrolls game...
I am looking for help determining which race I should be. So here are a few questions I hope you can answer to help put me in the right direction.

1) Which race will you be, and why?
2) I am interested in being a thief. Will stealing in game make my character evil, kinda like fable? And if so, how does being evil in the game play out differently than being good?
3) What is a good race for a balance of one handed weapons and magic?
4) Which is better, stealth combat, or brute force?

Thanks for your help! I guess every race seems somewhat appealing to me, so I do not know what to pick...ALTHOUGH, I am not interested in using bows or alchemy.

3) Dark Elf would work.

Dark Elf is what I am using. I also want to focus on one handed plus magick so I figured that is a good choice.

EDIT: BTW does this guy ^^^^ troll every thread? Or just a lucky few? Seems like a winner.

I'm going to be a Nord for the first playthrough..battlemage most probably. It's Skyrim, so feel I have to pay homage in some way. Second Playthrough- Bosmer thief/assassin. Get to cover the most 'ground' with that combination of play styles. This is the Elder Scrolls, it is possible to RP a good thief- a certain action cannot fully determine your characters morality ..unless of course it's mass murder- moving on:
Third point: I guess Dunmer, maybe. Haven't had a good look at the racial bonuses yet. You can make any race work for any style of play. Although some are more suited, at the beginning, than others.
For your last point- that entirely depends on how you want to play.

My advice- mess around with the character creator, find a race you like....it really is up to you if they suit your preferences or not.

Play a kitty-cat!

Those make great thieves, and look absolutely awesome this time around.

I plan on my first character being a Bosmer assassin/thief, specializing in mostly bow attacks with a bit of either 1 hand short short or dual wield dagger. (As to why bosmer, I personally like them as a ranger/stealthy character and their racial bonuses also mesh well.) I'm not entirely sure about fame/infamy (to be honest I never really understood it much in oblivion, except that it made a few restrictions to quest options and how people like you). In oblivion I balanced thievery and dark brotherhood stuff with good actions and it worked out well, although that idea might anger some role players :).

For the rest, just pick whatever suits your idea of how you think you want to play. You can really do anything you want. And you can always make a new character if you dislike your first.

The way I chose my race is by first deciding what kind of character I wanted to play. The one I chose is in my signature. Once I figured out the style that I would like, I chose a race that had similar traits. Read up on some of the races as well. If the lore of one race in particular speaks to you, then you'll have your answer already!

Deciding on Redguard was a no brainer (for me) once I picked the berskerer dual wield type play. They are a very skilled race of warrior--often revered as the best in the lands. They are great for small skirmishes and are the best 1 handed swordsman you can find (according to the history and lore).

I'm guessing other races have similar traits for the things they are known for.

However, you don't HAVE to choose a race because of what they've done in the past--it's just what I chose to sort of keep the rpg aspects in a semi-balance.

Good luck! ;)

Thanks for the quick reply everyone. Money has been tight recently, so I skipped getting uncharted 3, battlefield, and COD for this game. I know I made the right choice, so I want to make sure I get the best possible experience from this game.

I disagree wholeheartedly on your pure-thief choice.

All my thief characters have always been Bosmer. Stealing items while mostly in the form of an animal makes me feel like I'm part of a Dora the Explorer episode >_>.
Maybe that's just me.

Lol @ getting the most out of this game.

TES games can keep you busy for 500-1000 hours or more, they are not like roller-coaster rides you mentioned.
I'm quite confident that it's the same for Skyrim.
