[WIP] New Nipton

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:44 am

I've been working on this concept a little. What it comes down to: A player developed town, with some choices for the type of town. The ′New Nipton′ title isn′t final so if you think you know a really good title for the mod let me know. :P

First of all, the town would have to be cleaned up. After that, you start out with 2 basics choices: Become the mayor of the town and continue fleshing it out, or handing it over to the NCR for an instant reward, a couple more follow up quests/things, but other than that losing control of the town. There might be another faction you could hand it over to as well.

If you become the owner of the town, there's a lot that needs to be done. A few buildings need to be repaired so people can live there. Caravan groups could be talked to so that they put Nipton on their route. Trade agreements could be made with Novac and Primm. The town needs its defenses upgraded to protect it from hostile factions trying to take it over.

Once you've got the basic living conditions down, there should be more customizable elements again. Like, what kind of town is it going to be. Here are the town types I had in mind.

-Trading/Farming town
-Casino/entertainment town
-Slavery/Small Industry town
(Comparable to 'The Pitt', basically, but more simple)

After that you can base your decisions of what you want to build/arrange, and in what order, based on how the town is doing. You can't build a large casino without investing in some kind of security first. If you want a decision that the Nipton residents might not agree with, you'd better make sure they are pretty satisfied with how the town is first.

Most of the town specific stuff will be placed in the town hall. The top floor will be for you (and your advisor guy, who carries out your decisions for the town), but the other floors could be turned into a casino, or some sort of workplace for slaves, or maybe a meeting spot for traders. Most of the generic Nipton houses will be a place to live for the new Nipton inhabitants. But one could become a medical clinic or a jail, etc..

=====================

Feedback is appreciated.

I'm currently working on the first security part, which follows after the initial cleaning and just before you decide what kind of town Nipton is going to be. Any suggestions as to where the Courier would be able to find people willing to work as a security guard in Nipton?

Maybe just add a few new guard NPCs to various factions. One fleshed out guard who can be convinced it would be in the factions interest to help protect New Nipton and they can bring some generic help along. NCR to keep the Legion away and vice versa. Followers might want to run a clinic or mission in town assuming you aren't into slavery. Brotherhood might want to guard a small industry town. I'm sure Mr. House could be talked into loaning some Securitrons. Yes Man is game for anything. Powder Gangers might work for explosives and for a real chaotic town I'm sure Fiends would "protect" it for chems.

awesome idea from one of my favourite modders :D.

perhaps if you go to NCR or Powder Gangers they will supply the guards for the town?
which you means you gain reputation from the relevant group.

An obvious choice is the NCR, who will set up a small outpost at the edge of town. Though that would probably come at some sort of price (toll, or something that benefits them financially) if you can't convince them it's in their best interest.
I don't think the Legion is really a choice, considering that it's an important trade-route for the NCR and a bit outside of the Legion's territory.

There isn't really much of a merc faction in NV to recruit from, so it'd suggest putting some NPCs into the world that you can recruit.
Say a former raider, a merc down on his luck, a laid-off caravan guard and/or an ex-soldier. Each could be convinced to work for you through several skill checks or some initial monetary incentive and have several people to call upon.
I don't know if it's possible, but perhaps build in a check that follows how well your town is doing economically which effects if your guards are happy and whether you can expand your towns security.

Another idea is perhaps you can choose to add some robots or turrets as extra (you need more money to buy in, but is less dependent on town-happiness) or maybe a mostly robot security force (one or two guys for that human touch  ).

Really looking forward to this.

And the fact that it was the Legion who destroyed the town in the first place. :hehe:

That might work, but I'm trying to avoid the NCR for this part.

Oh yes, electronic/robotic security is definitely planned.

Well, if you do the BoS quests right they talk about going up to the surface. So that might be an option if you've completed their quests right first. :P

Destroying it is one thing, but keeping it in the middle of NCR outposts, unconnected is something else.
It's interesting, though it probably is best to keep the guard impartial and loyal to you alone.

That might work, but I'm trying to avoid the NCR for this part.

Yeah, they're everywhere already and there is already the option to give the town to the NCR.

It's not really the style of the BoS to help locals like that.

Make it faction have a specific incentive like have energy weapon factories for the BOS, recruitment centers for the Legion, rest stops for the NCR?
I'll suggest having rebellions if people get angry at your policies?

Reading posts like this always make me want to run out and buy a new computer.

Anyways, from a story standpoint, I think you could tap into the Followers and be pretty successful with it. Ezekiel looks pretty bored at the 188.
Also, what about turning Nipton into a benvolent/malevolent (your choice, depending on how you play) Ghoul town? It has a sort of "undead" feel to it already, so I think its perfect for a "Ghouls pretending to be scary" type thing. Perhaps the renegade Rangers decide to rebuild with your help and you can travel around the wasteland pointing Ghouls in that direction, much like the Black Mountain guard?

It's supposed to be your town, so I think using any of the big factions kind of negates that. Aside from securing a trade-route, there's really not that much gained for them by guarding your town.

The only exception are the Followers, since they are more about helping rebuild. Though they wouldn't supply guards. At best they would send one or more doctors and technicians over.

Did a wee bit of thinking. How about slave guards? Controlled by a master slaver that you hire? Ex-legion. A person thrown out of legion for being a wee bit to cruel.

Idea being all the slaves have collars, and if the slave master dies, all the collars detonate. If they leave the town it detonates, if they annoy him it detonates (you get the picture). Add in a couple other slavers who essentially act like his bodyguard. (Or make the prime slaver a rather demented women from legion territory, who loves legion ideas towards slavery but couldn't join because of her gender.

Admittedly such a setup would be dangerous to the owners if not setup right. But that's why you hired the most ruthless sob the legion ever produced :P

edit: Another benefit of this is you could explain away all the guards not speaking at all if you wanted. They all go their tongues cut out by the master slaver, simply because he/she didnt want them blabbing about his/her business. What happens in nipton stays in nipton!

Anyhow that'd just leave that single master slaver to voice, which seems far less problematic.

Kvatch Rebuilt for the Mojave Wasteland... I can dig it! (Okay, that's a broad comparison, but I couldn't help it)

Please excuse my suggestions, as they are both brief and outlandish:
- Perhaps Nipton could develop as an independent city-state, and you would have a hand in deciding the political system (assume dictatorial powers, support an oligarchy, or implement a more egalitarian setup)
- Repeatable combat/defense missions might be nifty (Admittedly, violence is always high in my modding priorities - it's a shameful commentary on my warped perspective) :)

Oh, and my only real concern would be possibility of a conflict in case the developers decide to alter Nipton in DLC, but I'd bet against it. Good luck with this - I'll definitely be tracking it!

It would be cool if there were roles for the companions. They could be your town council, each with a job or business they run while not out with the courier raising hell. Cass is a trader, so might reopen the general store or perhaps run a bar. Boone could lead your troops/police and keep the peace. You get the idea.

Like Some Guy said...A NV version of Kvatch rebuilt? Yes please.

Its a great concept too. I'll be keeping an eye on this, and good luck. :)

A cool speech challenge to do if your people were trying to rebel would be something like "Seems to me somebody wants the legion to come back, hmm? Is that what you want?"

I was thinking about this while walking through the ruins on my second game. How about the option to make it a giant middle finger to the legion? Just rebuild it as an even bigger hive of six, greed, excess, and vileness... Have all of the prosttutes have "Goddess" titles( Goddess Aphrodite, Goddess Artemis... basically all of the Greco-Roman Goddesses), sick videos involving bulls, etc.(a description in your notes only, not actual videos), etc. Just REALLLY piss those Legion off; maybe even get some NCR militarily support while remaining independent... the mass amount of outrage and morale weakening coming out of there would surely get some attention from the Legion and that would take some pressure off of the Dam. (Ceaser might be smart enough to realize it's an obvious ploy to get their attention, but some lower level generals and grunts would likely fall for it)

That's basically just a possible outline for the city, as for quest ideas; let's seee:

A quest where you have to convince some people to try rebuilding the city despite the whole thing of it being a smoldering city that is probably still being watched by the legion. (possible convincing points could be: Infrastructure/basic buildings still intact, maybe feed them the idea of it being an offense to the Legion(You'd have to be a very good diplomat or talk to people who really hate the Legion, because for most people that'd be a major con), it's on a main road, many people still haven't heard about Nipton being destroyed so if they do it fast they can get a bunch of customers without them knowing anything(Doing "Cold, Cold heart" would make this a failure), etc.)

A quest to hire mercenaries to defend the place during the rebuilding.... Sort of like the above, but with some more moral ambiguity (like hiring powdergangers, gangs, fiends, Khans, or some other less than nice group in return for some kind of reward. (six/discounts for gangers, hideout/base for gangs, drugs for fiends, a small covert encampment to bother NCR for Khans.)

A quest to set up more permanent security/protection for the city. (Ooo, I know! a security company run by two guys named http://www.newvegasnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=901216, and http://www.newvegasnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=367899 lol )

A quest to advertise the city... Maybe stuff like getting Nipton mentioned on the Radio stations, Neon signs from Michael Angelo, a loading screen advertisemants for the player(as a joke), etc.

Setting up new trading agreements, and routes.

political stuff (like maybe some backlash if NCR founds out you worked with the Khans, powder gangers, etc.)

Recruiting new citizens; particularly ones with trades (shop keeper, bar keep, prosttute(s), sheriff, jester, town drunk, hunter, etc.)
