New phone suggestions?

Post » Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:26 am

Thinking of getting a new phone, any ideas? Looking at about £300 price limit, Pay as you Go.

Are Blackberries any good for anything other than BBM? I was thinking about one of them and then using my Iphone 3gs as an iPod or something.

Meh I fancy a change after having this 3GS for ages.

@Defron the what version? That phone goes for about £500 anyway so I can't really afford it.

I have used the s2 before though and I really liked it.

I don't know about Blackberry, people around me seem to have theirs malfunction, and with the whole RIM thing going on, I doubt they'll last long.

The SII is a fine phone too, it's what I have. Do you have somewhere where us on this side of the pond can see the prices to get the idea of what's an option for you? I'm just shooting from the hip right now :P

I do not have a smart phone. I think they charge way too much for internet if you don't work for a company that has special phone plans. I have a military grade phone by casio that was about $250 that can stand water, shock, intense heat, falling from extreme heights (and yes it has been tested accidentally on every aspect except shock). It's the GzOne. I have Verizon and ever since I got it three months ago, my friend has gotten 3 new smart phones since his can't even survive a splash of water or a small fall off of his couch on to a carpet. Literally.

Which do you think would be best out of those three? I heard bad things about nexus like it is not supported by google anymore?

I'm partial to Samsung phones. The Galaxy Nexus is a rock-solid Android phone and the GSM one has excellent battery life. The one problem is that it lacks an SD card, which I've gotten used to having from even before I had a smartphone. The Galaxy S II isn't a wimp by any means, and you have some familiarity with it.

Just a shame that Google isn't offering the Nexus through the play store over there like they are here. It's only $350 here. Probably the first time a phone's been cheaper over here unlocked than over there.

Another vote for the Samsung Galaxy S III. The only reason I don't have one is because I have the S II and can't quite justify the expense of an upgrade right now.

Then those two phones will be on my list, are there any advantages Do you think to getting a blackberry (besides bbm obviously) or something like a Windows phone?

Blackberry is all but dead, to be honest. They kind of got left behind by Apple and Google, and it really shows in the way their software is put together. They're going to need something akin to an industry miracle to make a full comeback.

I've heard good things about Windows Phone (although I've only played with them in stores). If you're looking in that direction I'd wait for Windows Phone 8 to be released, though, since none of the current WP7.x devices are going to be upgradeable to WP8.

Overall I prefer Android...it's by far the most flexible and allows for the most customization (if that's important to you). The Galaxy Nexus is still being supported by Google, but Verizon insisted on enough proprietary modifications on their version that Google seems to have kind of washed their hands of it, support-wise. Other carriers won't have that problem, but I'd check first just to be sure. I chose the Galaxy S II over the Nexus...mostly for the SD card slot. I run a custom firmware and it's still nowhere near obsolete as far as performance (yet). I'll probably skip the Galaxy S3. My S II is plenty fast for what I use it for, and the S3 just edges into "physically just a little too big" territory for me.
