New Vegas compared to Fallout 4

Revenge is more original than finding a lost loved one? I would say they are both tropes that have been used alot.

What? If your Courier knows about the NCR and it will shatter your suspension of disbelief to ask a question phrased like that don't ask the question. Just like you don't have to have possibly impregnated a woman in Montana if you don't want to pick that dialogue option.

The story of New Vegas is much more than revenge.

And the story of Fallout 4 is also much more, so what is your point? Fallout 4 sends you out after your son, lets you take revenge, side with a number of factions to betray your son, or join him. I don't see how New Vegas story is any more original? Maybe its better written in terms of dialogue and plot, but that's it.

Yes, your character doesn't know about the biggest civilization on the west coast that has trading caravans going everywhere, has scouts going everywhere, it's the biggest player in the Mojave and has delivered packages from NCR clients before given Lonesome Road and the fact the devs specifically stated that the Courier didn't have amnesia. The Courier not knowing a large agricultural power that sends out trading caravans and scouts that controls almost the entirety of the western American coastline is just bad writing.

it's bad writing. Ignorance doesn't make it go away, ignorance doesn't change the fact it's bad writing.

There is nothing particularly original about a courier getting ambushed and then seeking revenge, particularly in a Western setting.

And there's a lot more to FO4 than finding a lost loved one.

No it's not. The rest is frosting. The cake is fine, the frosting is whatever you chose it to be whether it's awful or not.

Cider,

I would argue that it is perfectly valid for dialogue choices to be available for those players who are new and not well versed in a game worlds lore. Those of us who know the lore can just not choose those options.

There is nothing particularly original about a Father finding his lost son.

And there's a lot more to FONV than a courier getting ambushed,

See now you just summarized Fallout 4 with its one of many plot points, and try to turn New Vegas into the winner again. They both have more going on than the one thing, can't we just agree on that?

Jacobdg,

Good, then we are in agreement that neither game had a particularly original back story and that both games were much more than just their back stories.

It can be written that the Courier knows though. The Courier has clearly been active in the west long enough, the courier has been active in the Mojave. The Courier literally works for the MOJAVE express, not the Portland Express, not the Seattle Express, but the MOJAVE express. You can write dialogue for new players while making it seem the player isn't completely oblivious to the world around them but no, instead Obsidian went for the lazy route that literally makes no sense in any context when thought is put into it.

They don't go everywhere. They never went everywhere, have only reached the Mojave within the last couple of decades of the game start and the rise of Caesar's Legion would further limit their reach. There is no reason that every single traveler to the Mojave would be acquainted with the NCR.

Lonesome Road is not interchangeable with New Vegas. That Lonesome Road introduces substantial problems with the narrative and has bad writing is undeniable as far as I'm concerned. You can't then just use it to criticize perfectly fine lines in the base game which was developed and written by different people at an entirely different time with evidently no conception of what shape Lonesome Road was going to take.

Ah! But there's the rub. I couldn't even come up with a motivation as to why I would want to help/side with any of the factions or why I should even care what happens to NV at all. I couldn't figure out why my Courier would care about the Dam or NV or anything.

I ended up just killing everybody and starting a new game where I didn't help anybody and just wandered around. Now THAT was a good time.

Oh! I did help out the towns though. Free stuff ya know. :)

No, because one is more original and well written than the other.

I like NV way more than Fallout 4.

Also can we stop with the fan boy [censored] people? Can't have a single topic without fan boys running to the defense of their lord and savior Bethesda or Obsidian.

You don't have any good arguments for your case. You are just stating that your opinion is fact. Wasn't this supposed to be a discussion? If you are not open to input from others and looking at things differently, then you will not learn anything, or grow.

I always wondered why my characters were so clueless. I mean, honestly, obviously the Courier had been working in the Mojave region for a while before the story even started, so, outside of amnesia, why were he/she so clueless about everything and everyone?

Never got the sense of amnesia at all and it was established by a DLC that it didn't even exist.

Maybe when I start another character I'll just make her an idiot bimbo. At least then, her cluelessness will make sense.

If you can't figure out why you wouldn't want to decide the fate of New Vegas that's just a lack of an imagination. Sorry the story isn't all thrown at you with fill in the faction.

The only things I think Fallout 4 actually improved upon are the graphics and the combat mechanics. I suppose there's the settlement system, but that felt tacked on, and I personally never had any interest in it to begin with. I thought New Vegas did pretty much everything else better.

The story, the factions, the characters, and the role playing were some of the biggest failures of Fallout 4 for me, and these were New Vegas' biggest strengths. I really wish Bethesda had taken more notes in these areas.

I like a lot more than Fallout 4 story but that's my personal opinion. I could have a pocket full of [censored]s and every character in Fallout 4 need only [censored] to save their live I wouldn't give them one.

Never even remotely made obvious or hinted at. Johnson Nash doesn't know you and you're heading to Vegas through a route infested with deathclaws when you get ambushed. All New Vegas establishes as far as backstory goes is that you took a Courier job at some point somewhere.
