NIF but not importingreading

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 3:40 am

Hi,

Just hitching to see the NIF Format, unfortunately NISKOPE doesn't read it and the 3D Max importer do not recognise the file format, as expected, I suppose it's up to the good people of NIFTools to come up with the goods.

Still the fact it IS a NIF narrows things down a bit, means it's just a matter of figuring out what new bits they added to the format rather than decoding something from scratch, means the modelling community will be up and running quicker than many titles

I sure hope that is true.

Yea. Not using the NIF format anymore since the game isn't using the Gamebryo engine

I do believe it is still based off the newer Gamebryo Lightspeed and probably still the same model format. Unless they really needed to, it wouldn't make much sense to change the model format just for the hell of it.

Come to think of it, I might still have those 3dsMax scripts from the gamebryo lightspeed evaluation I checked out for my business/game a while back. Wonder if they'll work for Skyrim as is?

Gamebryo is more a set of tools and code-snippets than an engine.
Oblivion, Civilisation 4, DAoC, Empire Earth 2, Divinity 2 and RIFT are quite different, yet all were made with Gamebryo.

Yes, Skyrim uses a new engine, as did Oblivion, as did Fallout 3, but the NIF (Netimmerse-File) format predates Gamebrio, and I doubt that the differences will be that large. It was a big step from Morrowind to Oblivion, but Oblivion to Fallout 3 was mainly new structures and different organisation especially for textures.

Whoa, hi JOG. Nice to see ya.

Yeah, the game's been confirmed to use NIF files. That they're a new version of the format is not surprising. The NifTools team is still active, so hopefully Skyrim support for their various projects will be forthcoming.

Likewise. (And nice to see JB too ;) the old hands are gathering it seems.)

Hope so. Simple retexturing can be done with a hex editor, but after playing a bit with Fallout 3/NV I was quite impressed with what you actually can do with NifSkope, even without having any talent (or interest) in modelling.

Does NIF file version still 20.2.0.7?
Any news from NifTools forum?
also
Not about NIF directly but still interesting info, game uses .hkx files for animations I believe we can use Havok Content Tools
http://software.intel.com/sites/havok/en/
For editing of them, tools are free for noncommercial usage, also I found thats trees use them also and even have skeleton.

Hi, I started decoding the new .nifs last night. There's some interesting changes, shouldn't be too long before NifSkope can read all the files, however.
I can't run the game, so I can't verify my edits yet. Sounds like the console command SSG (ShowSceneGraph) doesn't work, hopefully it's in the game in some form.

http://niftools.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3164 to an updated nif.xml for NifSkope if anyone is interested. I'm tossing the file into my dropbox every once in a while as I go.

Dragon_Stalker, cool stuff, but I get the feeling that Behavior isn't a part of the Animation package.

Just tried to open the nifs and computer says no. I cant wait for this bit. The next sticking point will be getting a good export and import tool for Blender/Max and the like. Any ideas if this is being considered yet? or available even?
