NifSE

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 8:44 pm

Seeing as Skyrim continues to use .nif files, I'll be looking to port over NifSE.

Not really a whole lot else to say on the matter, but I figured I'd leave a note here about it.

(Note: I do not actually have the game yet and don't plan on getting it until ARES is released [...maybe]. Anyway, I won't be able to work on any port until sixy gets its API up)

Sounds good DragoonWraith! I imagine we'll have the APIs up for plugins pretty early this time (depending on what we have facing us of course.)

I wish there could be a painless way to import meshes with skeletal animations (like armor and clothes) from Oblivion to Skyrim. But unless both games use the same joints, same vertex-node repartitions, this will remain a pipe dream.

Yeah, that would be incredibly painful.

In my experience, the desire to port from the previous game goes away after a few months. You want it at first because it will take so long for new stuff to come out, but ultimately the games are different and the old games' assets would stick out like a sore thumb anyway.

Anyway, there've been some reports that Skyrim's using a new version of NIF; this should surprise no one, but that being the case, any NifSE port will be dependent on NifTools updating their projects.

On the other hand most of the armors are quite ugly so being able to use the nice one we had in Oblivion would be nice. But who need to worry about that :) I'm sure that plenty modders are already looking forward and moddeling already new armor sets for us :)

I, for once, will like to see a few armors and weapons meshes imported from Oblivion. I miss my mythrill armor. I wish I could now how to import it.

Wont it be a lil harder to import oblivion armor with the way the armor is now too? (chest and legs together) And I dont think anything is ugly in Skyrim

You can just join the two pieces and then go from there. No, the biggest hurtle we will face is figuring out the new rigging system which if I'm not mistaken has incorporated some new tech called Scaleform(it's the only other middle-ware acknowledged on the box besides havok). I suspect this is what they are using to morph the armor and bodies to different sizes.

Scaleform's the middleware that the new vector-based UI uses - It hasn't got anything to do with the rest of the engine.

EDIT: Typos.
