Nightkin redesign?

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 9:56 pm

Now that the Super Mutants have been remodeled to look like the FO1&2 ones, does that mean that the Nightkin also look like the new Super Mutants, only with a different texture?

They're basically the same Super Mutants but they're driven mad by overexposure to stealthboys, so they should look like the regular Super Mutants only darker.

I thought they were pale....

Maybe due to the light not hitting them.

Yup. If you look in the E3 gameplay trailer, it's pretty clear that now Nightkin use the same model as the mariposa super mutant, just with tweaked textures (they're gray instead of green, for once).

Yes, but after that the Super Mutants have been remodeled even further, just look at the screenshot of Marcus in front of Jacobstown. Marcus as well as the Super Mutant in the background now look very much like the original FO1&2 ones.

So have the Nightkin also been updated to this new version?

Yeah the Nightkin look like the Mariposa Mutants in FO1 and 2 except gray and more badass.

EDIT: They've been updated as well.

Well, I'd imagine Marcus has a unique model that is supposed to be closer to his original design, I'm not sure about the one in the background, though.

But if super mutants as a whole have gone through another design change, I'd assume that special types such as nightkin would too. It would seem pretty odd if generic mutants looked like the original Mariposa ones while special types still seemed closer to the Fallout 3 ones, after all.

It would be weird and disappointing if the Nightkin remain looking like the "YEEEEEEARRRRRG" super mutants from FO3. I presume - not know, that they would have been redesigned like the other ones as well.

I know it's kinda hard to make out, but if you look closely you'll see the one in the back has a more hunched posture and his head seems more broad, like the FO1&2 ones. I know it's not certain, but I'm quite confident they've redesigned the regular ones too.

The animations are separate from the model, meaning they can redo animations without redoing the models (captain obvious, I know, but I don't really see what you're talking about otherwise). And they've talked about redone idle animations at least since the fan interview. Nothing new here, though I guess that detail went over the head for some people.

I know, but just look at the one under the Jacobstown sign, he just doesn't look like the FO3 ones. It's more than just the hunched posture, even from that distance you can see that the face looks more like the originals.

Hopefully we'll soon get some new screenshots/video where we get some close-ups :)

Face only it seems. All (supermutant) art that I have seen ~including Marcus, would appear to use the original Spinebreaker with slight changes.
Marcus wears the diamond-wire wrist guards and has the radiator vehicle scrap chest plate & gas-cod just like all the rest.
(Which is odd... because the iron scrap is not part of the body mesh, and could be trivially changed ~unless its a time/deadline issue).

I don't know if this is correct anymore... see post #15

Huh?
You can't even see the fact from that distance.

I dare say they would not leave the Nightkin unchanged when they got the others pretty close now. Would be completely illogical.

If you're going to hyper-anolyze, you'll need better tools. :mohawk:

Yeah, at that resolution, the resolution to this case is very far.

Highly doubtful. You haven't been able to wear Super Mutant armor in any Fallout game, not even the more human sized Ghoul or Reaver armors. Super Mutant armor especially doesn't make sense, given the size of it.
