Nord ruins or reality?

It's really reality! Take a look at this nighttime photo from Iceland and I'll bet you have a sense of deja vu.

Absolutely.
It is a lovely picture and it does go to show how well they did their research.

But that henge is a new construct, if I understood it correctly? Never seen anything that even closely resembles the Ancient Nord ruins of Skyrim in real Scandinavia. And I live there AND am an archaeologist... But on the other hand, I don't know Iceland as well as Scandinavia :) For instance, they probably had much more stone architecture due to the lack of trees. Again, henges are a neolithic thing (like Stonehenge), and Iceland wasn't settled until early medieval times.

You madam/sir are entirely correct.
It is still a lovely picture, and I'm sure that Beth did do lots of research, but that'll teach me to actually pay a little bit more attention before nodding sagely, rubbing my beard and making sweeping pronouncements!! :D

Really? That's interesting. Have always had a knack for history myself, and archaeology was one of my biggest childhood dreams. (If I can say so when I'm fourteen )
Are you an expert on Norse history then? One of my favorites, my ancestors keep fascinating me.

Anyway, on topic. That's a great find, OP. A beautiful example of Aurora Borealis, over some fascinating stone structures.
I think Bethesda did the Northern Lights pretty well on this game really. It is something which is hard to recreate, but I think they did it quite good. Nothing beats the real thing though.

It is a lovely picture indeed, and a really cool construction, be it old or new :)

Far from expert. I have a degree, but not much field experience. Hard to find a job as an archaeologist here in Sweden...

Looks like that structure is indeed a modern construction. It's still under construction, actually. I could be wrong but that picture looks like concept art and not a real photograph. If true, it could very well have been inspired by Skyrim and not the other way around!

Tumulus? Barrow? Cairn, maybe? I'm not sure if any of those are actually Norse words... tumulus sounds Latin.

H?gar or haugen, it means hill. In English we usually say barrow or burial mound for such structures, dolmen for ones that have large stones on top.

Mounds?

Ancient Scandinavian burial mounds are extremely interesting. I want to be cremated in a long-ship with all my prized possessions!
