Nords of Skyrim vs The Skaal of Solstheim

Post » Sun Sep 01, 2013 2:28 pm

Two contrasting Nord societies with different religions, norms, outlooks on life and death and personalities. From your knowledge and experiences with both societies from reading the lore and playing Bloodmoon and/or Dragonborn which one do you prefer?

I'm going with the Skaal. Peaceful bunch. Only taking what they need.

I will go with the Skaal only because Bethesda decided to give them some cultural depth. IMO, the Nords of Skyrim were less developed and it clearly shows.

I would love to return to Skyrim in a future title if Bethesda does it right next time.

I think he likes them mainly because they are descended from the Dragon Cult.

People write this all the time, yet I fail to see how the religous beliefs of the Skaal could have somehow been derived from the Dragon Cult.

It's heavily implied in Dragonborn, but either it's wrong or Bethesda doesn't care about lore like Aevar Stone-Singer.

Typical Nords are uninteresting to me. The Skaal however interest me very very much and I have spent a lot of my game time on their side of Solstheim since getting Dragonborn.

Both have fallen from grace. However, I can at least compliment the Skaal for fighting against the tides of change, and adhering to the ancient Atmoran ways as best they could. They may have corrupted their worship of Alduin master of all, but the Nords of Skyrim have settled for heretical worship of mortals; completely forsaking Alduin Chief of Divines.

The Nords of Skyrim are a repulsive society who settle only for primal desires. I've met Imga whom are less gullible then them. So quick they are to worship a mortal as their replacement for a savage God. They are descendants of ambitious anarchists, who sought the roots of change and revolution, to bring destruction to all the Dragon cult has achieved. Effectively dooming the Nord race to that of a simpleton, superstitious, violent, six-driven Goblins that infest the holy land of Skyrim. *spits*

The Skaal have also succumbed to blasphemous heresies. But they also maintain some semblance to the Atmorans of old. They do not shun the arcane. They do not succumb to savagery. Dare I say, they actually think before they act. And bother to actually educate their young instead of being too busy drowning themselves in alcohol, like their devolved cousins on the mainland. If they were to blatantly acknowledge the All-maker for whom he truly is, Alduin First-born of Akatosh. Then I could proudly call them Atmoran.

With that said. The Skaal are the closest to the Atmorans of old. So I must settle for them.

Both are equally detestable. Praise Hermaues Mora! http://i.imgur.com/ITbpQ1t.jpg

In my days of mortality, I spent a few months travelling the land of Tamriel before settling in Bromjunaar with my fellow Priests.

Can you elaborate on this implication?

I am not looking to argue. I just want to know how people come to that conclusion.

BTW, I have read Aevar Stone-Singer. That book alone made me question all those people who write that the religious beliefs of the Skaal are linked to the worship of dragons.

I voted Nords of Skyrim. The Skaal are too simple/ignorant and weary of outsiders. They are just boring people to be around in my opinion.

A book by Tharstan I think added in Dragonborn states that the people of Solstheim are heirs of Valok. Tharstan speculates that the All-Maker is a distant echo of Alduin (which makes sense). Aka (Time and end of time) makes sense to an extent.. however the Skaal show no love at all for Dragons and seem more inclined towards wolves and bears. An aspect of the Skaal's Adversary is said to be worshiped by the Falmer.. or directly, it says that the Falmer are the servants of the Adversary. We know that they worship Auriel.. so it's hard to reconcile that.

Weary of outsiders? Did you even play Dragonborn? I thought an Imperial supporter such as yourself would find the Skaal a nice break from their more violent and Imperial-hating cousins in the mainland.

I think they were cooler in Bloodmoon. They even had guards in badass Nordic mail.
