Not a MMO Fan

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 9:12 pm

Yes like the whole world ive dabbled in WOW and tried LOTR online. If they can pull this off, ie not turn it into the cartoon crap that is WOW, then my life will be over, my wife will nail the divorce directly onto my forehead and the sack will be imminent. I couldn't believe it when the news popped up in Twitter and my initial reaction was nooooooooooooooo. However IF they stay true to the ES spirit, IF the lore is expanded and maintained, IF it enriches that lore and makes Tamriel more alive then I say hell yes.

Eh, I'm really, really sick of MMOs. I highly doubt this will change my opinion, despite how much I enjoy the Elder Scrolls series.

Cartoon crap that is WoW? That's the art style, carried over from the preceding RTS games, and has nothing to do with MMOs in general.

I'm glad you are open to the possibility of it being something awesome, however as many are pointing out, if you are simply not an MMO fan and don't plan on playing an MMO ever, this really doesn't have anything to do with you. Bethesda will be free to make single player RPG for TES and you know they will. If TES:O totally bombs, single player advocates still get single player TES games, while us MMO hopefuls get nothing.

The only people that truly are justified in worrying about this game are those of us who are actually excited about its potential.

They have been working on this game for the past 3 years. It has nothing to do with the single player games, otherwise there would be no Skyrim right now. Stop crying about things other people like.

Who is crying, giving my opinion and read the original post. The possibility that this maybe great is there. However, yes I do believe that MMO's (at the least the ones I've played) are boring cyclical games of quest fetch, quest fetch, quest fetch, rinse and repeat. Anyhow we will see and I am a fan of the ES worlds so I'm willing to give this a chance.

WoW is actually quite amazing for what it was, the problem is it is a 10 year old game and the genre is stagnating badly.

FPS are starting to have that problem too, (crosses fingers for Bioshock:Infinite and Dishonered to make me eat my own words)

I'm happy I'm seeing so many people agree that Bethsda [I don't care who is making it, it's all owned by the same people] is making a very big mistake. I hope their sales take a [censored] on this "game".

Shaddow are you trolling? BethesdaGS is not making this game. Its zenimax-online studios or something.

Have you even seen the scans? The stuff they already have in that game is pushing the MMO genre and achieving things most other studios have failed to do. Besides, I really enjoy the art style they are heading in with this MMO, and the uniqueness of the TES universe is still held onto even though the art style has changed. There's a really nice shot of an Ordinator in Mournhold that is obviously massively inspired by the art and architectural style of Morrowind.

The problem is that even if it isn't Bethesda making it, they're so attached to the name "The Elder Scrolls" that this is going to leave a bad impression in a lot of people's minds by default. With no chance of this succeeding at the level they expect (spoilers: It won't. Have you taken a look at the MMO market over the last five years?) it could be just as bad for Bethesda as TOR is for Bioware.

The questing system and public dungeons seem nifty, as does the 100vs100 battles. (certainly seems like they want more MMO and less instancing)

I'm just really peeved about the class system and semi hotkey combat.

If its more like LOTRO, I will be satisfied. The average age group in LOTRO is 26 according to the moderators at lotro forums.

No no, I hope you are. Research a little bit, they are all the same family of websites because they are all one general corporation split into different branches..

Yeah, you're so right, Crysis 3 is exactly the same as SimCity, right? I mean, they are both tied down and owned by ONE massive company...

The problem there is when you say "SimCity" you don't think "Crytek" or "Maxis" when you mention "Crysis". Bethesda and the Elder Scrolls, now? They're basically tied at the hip, and a lot of people are going to go "What the hell, Bethesda" at this.

I understand where you're coming from, but just because this is going to be an MMO doesn't mean that it is automatically awful. Maybe it will be, but people aren't giving it a chance and just jumping straight on the "this is a terrible game just because it's an MMO" bandwagon. The Gameinformer cover says that Bethesda check by quite often to make sure Zenimax Online aren't butchering the series, and the writers are very closely working with the lore masters over at Bethesda so that there's continuity in the lore because they're unwilling to break lore. I think the game will be good, but different, but I also accept that it's going to be hard to pull this off and may end up awful. People need to understand that Bethesda is still going to be developing single player games separately...

Thing is, the best thing for Bethesda right now would be to come out and say "nothing in the MMO is canon to the series". Use the existing setting and lore and what have you, but make it clear that it's an alternate take on things, nothing in it will effect real TES games, and that the SP TES games will continue as usual.

As far as "they're not giving it a chance", I'm not sure what you expected when it's clear that a large (and vocal) portion of these forums has made it pretty clear in the past that they don't want anything to do with regular multiplayer, much less massive multiplayer. Given that statements from Bethesda have come off the same way, suddenly having this crop up is a pretty sharp slap in the face to a lot of people.

What I don't understand are the people who actually 'want' the game to fail. Its fine if you don't like the idea or don't want to play it, but hoping it fails or doesn't do well just because you don't like the idea of a TES MMO makes you look petty.
