Not possible to commit crimes in secret?!

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 1:37 am

Why is it whenever I try to commit a crime/murder/etc, it's so hard to do it in secret?

Lockpicking is the most common for me, I can't seem to do without someone that isn't in plain site seeing me. Is it not possible in this game or is it that I'm just doing it wrong? Please tell me it's the second option.

I agree, i thought they fixed that in this game, like if you murder someone behind closed doors, even if they dont escape you get a bounty which makes no sense

I remember them confirming that if you kill all the witnesses the game displays a message saying so and you are spared of the bounty.

Well idk if it says im hidden then i never get caught. If a person sees me then you can kill them and it erases the last part of your bounty.

Not sure about this one actually, if you kill somebody with one blow, I think it may be quiet... But I'm not sure, since people would likely hear the screaming if you didn't kill in one.

It's because it makes noise. If you kill them in one hit with a dagger, it's silent. Actually, I've killed somebody in the middle of a crowded room with a dagger and nobody noticed. At least, I was able to escape before anyone blamed me for it.

Doesn't seem like it, sniped someone with a bow and somehow was caught. Stealing, locking picking no problem.

That is odd because I NEVER get caught if I am sneaking.

This works, I have done it.

My cousin kills people with a bow all the time and never gets caught. I think this "problem" is just a matter of circumstances.

Two questions.

1. Are you SURE nobody was watching you? If yes...

2. Were there any Mudcrabs around? Because Mudcrabs will report you to the authorities.

I killed a chicken in riverwood and it told me the last witness had been killed. So um...I'd be a little more careful. Also, I think NPC's can see through doors somewhat. They can definitely communicate oddly with a door near them.

I think stealing is easy when sneaking and my sneak is only 40 or so.

That said I have not tried killing people.

It seems you don't have the fortune of Nocturnal, because I started off getting nearly all my levels the thief way, sneaking, lockpicking, pickpocketing, not to mention killing hapless shopkeeps while they slept. And I've never, allow me to reiterate, never been to jail.

It seems really hit and miss - I've stolen some stuff, hidden and with no bounty and then a few days later ran into some hired thugs trying to kill me, sent from this guy.
A time when it did work was in an Ebony mine filled with Orc tribals who were actually non hostile but I'd killed on already by mistake (sniped him with the bow, didn't want to take a chance) - my bounty with them racked up but when I killed the last one it said the witness was dead and the bounty was lost.

I stole some ingots from under the workbench in Riverwood, no one saw me and I didn't get any bounty. A few days later Alvor sends some mercenaries to kill me. How on earth did he know that I was one who stole them?

I unno, you're probably not being careful enough.

I haven't had any issues with getting caught...you just need to be very, very cautious about your surroundings.

I fail at stealing things in a sneaky matter.
I always get caught somehow.

Dunno. The publican of the Candlehearth Inn in Windhelm paid some thugs to do me in. Why? For stealing a minor health potion, behind a closed door, in an empty room. Though she was some biased ***** who hated anyone not Nordic. Should kill her for that stunt, but I won't (this time).

I killed an entire family (well, okay, they were only two) in Riverwood when they caught me robbing their home and I've gotten away with it. Can't really agree there... ;)
