DG now £10 sale on STEAM, Is it worth it?

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 2:39 am

Hey Guys

I Love Skyrim, and apart from GW 2 and TL 2, I dont really play much else, but Im quite impulsive and rather than dive in and just waste the cash.. Is DG worth it. Ive read loads of mixed and somewhat dissapointed reviews, but DGs been out awhile now and we're upto 1.7 with Skyrim, so has DG been patched to iron out any of the bugs at all.

Im also starting a new Elf character, so was going to install DG with a New Game, will that help, or is DG just better now.

Anyway the Sale ends in a day or so, but theres Morrowind and Obiivion GOTY for less than £8 each.. Im tempted by Morrowind :)

Cheers All

The only issue that was fixed because of Dawnguard was an issue with Vampiric Drain preventing you from going underwater. The unofficial patch may have fixed more issues. Both Morrowind and Oblivion are great deals at that price. You may need to mod Morrowind to fix the combat but it is a great game. Oblivion is also a great game although it suffers from over use of level scaling, mods have fixed that problem.

My opinion, get Morrowind and Oblivion GOTY's, play them 1st and decide if you need to add mods. Dawnguard's not going anywhere and some of the problems with Dawnguard will eventually get fixed.

Neither Morrowind nor Oblivion are going anywhere either. I've had no problems with Dawnguard - contrast that with Oblivion where I've spent more time trying to fix it than play it.

The price needs to drop by 75% or more before Dawnguard can be considered worth buying.

Dawnguard is a lot of fun and some aspects of the DLC are very well done--I wish they'd done as good a job fleshing out characters in some of the main quest lines for Skyrim as they did here. I'm assuming you are a PC user and probably use mods--if not, you should, because they are awesome. If this is the case, then I do think you should buy Dawnguard; but I would wait until it goes on sale. Anyway, some things to consider:

If you are using mods you will probably need to start the game with a fresh character to avoid problems with old scripts. A lot of crashes people blame on the Dawnguard DLC are caused by issues with scripts running from uninstalled mods, so you will save yourself a lot of headaches by just starting a new character. If you are using mods with leveled lists, you will need to install Wrye Bash (if you aren't already using it) and let it merge the leveled lists for you or you will encounter lock-ups and crashes at various points in the game.

You will also need to check to see if any mods you are running have conflicts with Dawnguard and download and install any updates available for those mods to avoid problems. I would strongly recommend downloading the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.

You may run into problems with choppy framerates or having your game turn into a slideshow after installing Dawnguard, even if you had no problems playing Skyrim previously. This is a video driver issue and you will need to either update your video driver or revert to a previous version to resolve it.

Lastly, you will hear some people describe Dawnguard as a bugfest that crashes constantly while others claim to have played through the quest multiple times with barely a hiccup. Your experience will likely fall somewhere in the middle of this range and can vary with each playthrough. There are a lot of factors that do not involve user error or mods which can lead to crashing and glitching in Dawnguard. Over time, people will begin to sort out what is getting some users into trouble and will likely implement fixes for these issues--which you can't quite call bugs.

The longer wait, the better your experience is likely to be. You will have to put less effort into dealing with problems and can spend more time enjoying the game at a lower price. Based on my experience with Skyrim and Dawnguard, I don't plan to buy any additional DLC (no matter how awesome) until they go on sale or all of the kinks and issues with them (whoever is to blame for them) are resolved.

Hi, Thanks for the great responses.. it seems to be mixed again, I shouldve mentioned, DG is on sale, but its only 30% off at £10, instead of £14.. if that Maths is right.. :). I am using PC version 1.7, Im using Workshop Mods.. Sounds.. the Wilds, Dragon Falls Manor, Power of the Gods. If i do install Mods I always use well rated ones, I also intend to start a New Game with DG installed and I keep my STEAM options to "always Update".

Cheers

I agree. 20 dollars was a bit much for the amount of bugs and quality of the beginning of the story and that a good portion of time is travel between quests.

But 10 bucks seems about right to be worth the price.

When you say sale, do you mean a temporary thing or is this a price drop?

I believe this one is temporary. I don't see it being permanent this early on either.

10 English pounds (or euros, I'm not sure which), not American dollars.

Im aware xD
I'm just agreeing with the other guys price of 10 bucks lol

But the current sale price is over 10 bucks. Dunno exactly, it might be 16 bucks or something? I'm not good with currency.

But is not just a matter of "change", we must take into account the different inflation in the two countries.

50% off is fine with dawnguard

Temporary. All Elder Scrolls are the midweek sale on Steam. It'll end friday.

Propably, this is only -30% after all. I'd bet it goes -50% in the almost assured Skyrim day of the christmas sale :hehe:

I'd say it is. Dawnguard is worth 10 bucks.
But it's 10 Euros, not 10 bucks, and there isn't a 1-to-1 exchange rate (hence a lot of Europeans complaining when Steam releases games that cost $50-60 here in America, and the same number of Euros for European players). Dawnguard is currently $13.99 on Steam, which is a $6 discount from the usual price.

I've been debating Dawnguard for a while, and may indeed get it while it's on sale (which lasts until October 4th). The only thing that's really held me back is all the stories of important NPCs, including merchants and quest givers, being killed off in random vampire attacks. Having cities and villages looking like ghost towns would ruin the game for me, and save/reload may not always be an option since it's possible to have attacks occur out of your line of sight, leading the player to play for many more hours without realizing that some important people are dead. If nothing else, I guess one could buy it while it's on sale and then not enable the DLC until there's been another patch or two (though it's possible that a Fall or Christmas sale could bring about a bigger discount).

You can use a mod that will disable the town attacks so you don't have to worry about it.

Thanks to everyone for your input and advice, after reading all your opinions, Ive actually bought it and started a New Game as an Elven Ranger/Thief, I also downloaded the Unofficial DG patch and it all runs fine. Im in UK, so it was £10 GBP, but its normally £14. I think waiting till christmas sale or seeing if it gets bundled cheaper with Hearthfire is a bit pointless coz I couldve had so much enjoyment out of it by then and probably finished it and to be fair £10 isnt THAT much, plus its kinda like that age old dilema.. If I wait, it'll be cheaper then... and in 6 months, even cheaper again amd in a year.. and so on, all i really wanted to know was.. Is it rubbish or not, but the dilema for me was the original £14 price for just 10-15 hours of gameplay just wasnt worth the money.

As has been mentioned, its actually in a Elder Scrolls Sale and ends in about 24 hrs, so ide jump in if you want it, but think ill hang out for Morrowind, i know theres mods out there, but the travel system and the levelling just irritates me.

Anyway Thanks again all, Much appreciated
