Also, as a bonus: there have already been proposals for nuclear fusion pulse drives for spacecraft, two of which NASA is funding. The energy could be used directly for propulsion, so engineering obstacles like how to convert the energy into electricity don't have to be overcome. Experimental fusion space craft will probably be exploring the cosmos before the first light bulbs are powered entirely by a fusion reactor.
