I'm thinking about upgrading from a 550 TI to either a GTX 560 or AMD 6950 card, and I'm wondering which I should choose? Or maybe I should upgrade my CPU, which is a AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.20 GHz.

I'd go for the GTX 560 if only because of the awesome Nvidia drivers. Seriously, AMD may have great cards but the drivers they release are [censored] horrible.

What games do you plan on playing? And do you do other projects on your PC such as video editing/rendering?

Between those two cards, I personally would say go with the AMD 6950. I use the 6970 and its great actually thinking about getting a second one (due to my high resolution)

The Nvidia one. I have AMD, and I regret buying a computer with it. :sadvaultboy:

The GTX 560Ti you mean. I believe the 6950 has better benchmarks overall, but its not a noticable difference.

Your cpu is fine.

To avoid problems like this in the future you should probably just pick a side and stick with it. That's what most people do.

Yep. In fact you could probably overclock that CPU safely if you have decent cooling and if your power supply is up to it. :)

The 6950 is going to be the faster of the two considering that's the vanilla GTX 560. If it was the 560 Ti, then it would probably be a wash overall.

I have a 1GB 6950 from Sapphire and it is absolutely outstanding. I can run Battlefield 3 on Ultra at 1080p resolution and get flawless frame rates even in heavy combat. It also runs Crysis on Ultra at about 38-42fps.

If you get the 6950 then you should put up for the 2gb of v-ram version.

Thats what I got, every game I have played on it gets destroyed. (good thing)

Hehe...not I. I look at both every time. Then again, I don't believe in brand loyalty.

Just about every benchmark I've seen puts the 1GB and 2GB versions of 6950 cards within 1-2 fps of each other at 1080p/1920x1200 and below. I personally would only opt for the 2GB version if it's not much more expensive.

Radeon HD 6950 1GB vs. 2GB

Certainly, the first thing we wanted to know is if the reduction memory capacity with the Radeon HD 6950 GPU would cause a reduction in performance. We found that at lower resolutions like 1920x1200 the answer is no, performance was not impacted much if at all. Since both video cards use the same GPU the end-result was the same. Playing at 4X AA at 1920x1200 yielded no performance differences in any of the games.

It was only at the highest setting of 2560x1600 with 8X MSAA did we start to see differences. The 2GB Radeon HD 6950 clearly allowed 8X MSAA in some games to be playable, and in others allowed us to use Transparency Antialiasing at 2560x1600. The 1GB Radeon HD 6950 struggled with these higher settings. Still, in some cases performance was the same as long as the AA setting was lower at 2560x1600.

Yeah, the only reason you really need 2GB of VRAM on the 6950 is if you're using Eyefinity.

I think you should go with the geforce one mainly because the company supports eSports which makes them awesome and clearly the better option. ;)

As for gforce versus amd, as dc-computing goes,in the past nvidia was superior with the likes of f@h or boinc-projects, it is apparently still way better in f@h (don′t do that anymore my self),but as boinc goes gpu supported projects amd usually wins big with the exception of gpu grid, otherwise amd is really a way better pick.
Otherwise for gpu accelerated software nvidia(cuda) is more common but amd are coming strong there too, finally bitcoin and amd is matchmaking from heaven where nvidia isn′t (as much).

As games goes,it depends, really a matter of trial and error, still nvidia + linux is often easier, amd+linux may require more effort, depends a bit on the distro though.
