NVidia Issues

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:07 am

Starting an NVIDIA based thread, since that's what I have.

First issue, game keeps giving me (for lack of a better description) BROKEN geometry when starting a new game - (screen was full of blue polygons, tearing, couldn't even see the Ark.

After repeated restarts I think I got it fixed by enabling AA & GPU inclusion, though I might have just gotten lucky.

-

Additional issues, game textures look really LOW (like GL Quake 1), and texture Popping (textures look awful as you spin, but then 'pop' into memory and look hi-res) - hoping to make the fixes I've found via the Steampowered forums (can't test until I get home from work).

About 75% of the time when I try to 'Save' the game freezes, and I have to relog into Steam - not sure what might be causing this.

I am running 2 Nvidia GTX 590's The game looks amazing for me. Funny thing is the game is only being rendered on 1 of the 4 gpu's. This might be driver thing. It is not a problem I have the game running at max settings and it runs with no issues for me. When I game I run HWMonitor. Only one core is heating up so I assume that means only one core is being worked. I guess I just do not like the idea of one core getting worked when I have 4 available.

Thats because the game doesnt support SLI, for some enabling SLI even cripples performance.

It seems like everyone I talk to that runs the same beta Nvidia drivers I am running seems to be running the game perfectly as I am. What drivers are you using currently?

If you're not using the 285.38 beta drivers, might be worth you checking out. Just a thought.

Specs:
Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.8Ghz
EVGA 680i SLI
2x GTX 260 Core 216's in SLI
8Gb Corsair Dominator RAM

Ive been getting the same stupid polygons as well. Whats weird however is that I can kinda see my pod in the opening intro, the interactive screens work, if i can find my way out i can see my characters hand just fine and even saw the buggy too. But its like ALL the geometry is stretched everywhere.

My PC

Win XP SP3
Q6600 (2.4ghz ish. yeesh its old :P )
2GB ram
9800GTX+

Grabbed the latest 280 drivers as well as those 285 beta drivers to no avail. Ill have to try messing with the settings in the nvidia control panel like you did.

I posted this on another forum but will post here since I have problems with my nvidia card. Its not stated below but the card I am using is a 8800gtx.

Seems if you have a older Nvidia card that cant run GPU transcoding on the CUDA cores you get the massive texture popping. That seems to be only one of the problems since the game seems to use very little video memory and system ram. On my video card the game peaks at using around 550mb of video memory when I have 768mb, for the indoor sections it only uses around 400mb. It seems to have the same problem with using system ram, I have 4gb and when running the game last night it would only use about 2gb of the 4gb and the rest went un used.
The game looks great if you are standing still or moving slow but it looks like crap when you start to turn around fast.
This is a ID game so I still trust them to try and find the problems and patch them or get Nvidia/AMD to fix the drivers, but so far its been one of the worst launches for a ID game that I have seen.

The Nvidia 285 driver can't even find "compatible graphics hardware," even though I know I have a GeForce that's compatible.... Where do I go from here? : P

ehhhh, double check to make sure ur card is support in that beta?

after that, it's either a image issue (your windows hardware registry is corrupt) or a card issue?

or just messed up beta driver... they forgot to add the driver sig for ur card in that release even though it may say supported?

i5
win7
gt 220
8gb

I started the game twice after install from DVD.

The pre game console listed a bug, which I was able to correct for by downloading the most recent version of the nvidia drivers (see first sticky'ed post).

By lowering resolution and turning off my secondary monitor I was able to get to the 'leaving the arc crash', There was horrible banding just below center of screen up until player control was allowed.

I then played twice to the acceptance of the first quest. Textures were a little slow loading and it sure didn't feel like a smooth 60 fps.

Please advice.

I've got a GTX-580 and the updated drivers. It's smooth, only problem I'm having is when I move my mouse I get a horizontal bar that flickers and then it goes away when I stop. Do you have the problem too? Anyone else?

Just wanted to add in, I just upgraded to the Nvidia beta drivers and it has fixed the OpenGL related crash I kept getting, the game is playable now. It also seems to have mostly solved the texture pop-in that was rampant before. It has however introduced two new problems that weren't present before. Not sure if it's the lack of Vsync or what but there is some screen tearing going on now, nothing major but frequent and noticeable enough to get annoying. Also there is some stuttering now, not sure if it's fps acting up but my movement is jittery even though the game itself doesn't seem to be suffering, can still play but again it is very annoying. Other than those two things, so far so good, at least I can actually play, even if it's not crisp yet.

TO ANYONE GETTING STUTTERING ISSUES, I HAVE A FIX.
My game runs perfect with no pop in or anythin.
Specs i7 965 Extreme @ 4.5ghz
6 gigs ram
Gtx 580 Superclocked
1Tb HDD

I ahve the latest beta driver installed. In nvidia driver - Force enable triple buffering and vsync - set aniso to application controlled or u will get patched textures (grid-lines).
As far as stuttering - right click on rage and uncheck the box for "enable steam community in game". this fixed all stuttering.

Also, to help with pop-in, Under C:\Users\(user)\App data(hidden folder)\Local - add folder id software and inside that add folder rage. so final target shud be C:\Users\(username)\App data\Local\id software\rage.
Then set launch options by rightcicking rage or by adding this line to your default.cfg in base folder - fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024 - this will cause 1gb of textures to be cached.

These settings fixed all my problems. If you want to firther tweak here are some other cvars u can add to you default.cfg to force graphics settings:

//Custom Cvar setting + tweaks
set com_allowConsole 1
fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024
ik_enablesmoothing 0
jobs_numthreads 4
m_smooth 0
cvaradd g_fov 10
vt_minlod -1
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192
vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
vt_uncompressedvmtr 1
vt_uncompressedphysicalimages 1
vt_vmtrcompression none
mem_phymemblocksizem 3072
cg_useprecompressedtextures 0
cg_usecompression 0
image_anisotropy 16
g_showplayershadow 1

Thanks but this didn't fix the stuttering or freezing for me, it actually made it slug even more. I even played around with some of the memory allocations because I have a 560 and not a 580. Thanks though. But it's still completley unplayable for me. Something is wrong outside of just config changes. I even tried to run Rage as Administrator and set it's priority as HIGH...Turned off Virus detection...etc etc...Nothing has worked. Somebody wake me up!

you have a gt220 which does not even come close to meeting the minimum requirements of an 8800 to play the game.

do everything i sed except for that last big list of cvars. that causes my game to run slow too cause its loading textures. once i load game is freezed for like 15 seconds while it loads it all but after that i ahve no problems. so either be patient or try it without those cvars like i sed. just do the top part and u shud be fine

in other words just do this part
Step 1. Install latest beta driver
Step 2. In nvidia driver - Force enable triple buffering and vsync - set aniso to application controlled or u will get patched textures (grid-lines).
Step 3. As far as stuttering - right click on rage and uncheck the box for "enable steam community in game". this fixed all stuttering.

Step 5. Right click rage and go to "launch options" and type +fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024 - this will cause 1gb of textures to be cached.

NOTE: DONT USE THE OTHER CVARS LISTED PREVIOUSLY - THEY CAN CAUSE EXTREME PERFORMANCE DECREASES OR MAKE GAME FREEZE FOR 20-40 SECONDS AFTER YOU LOAD SAVED GAME. JUST DO THIS PART!!!!!!
PS - IF YOU DO HAVE A HIGH END RIG - U CAN USE THOSE CVARS - JUST KEEP IN MIND ONCE YOU LOAD YOUR SAVED GAME BE PATIENT! IT DID NOT CRASH, ITS JUST PRELOADING TEXTURES AND WILL FREEZE FOR A MINUTE!

:( I took all those cvars out of my default.cfg did everything on this list and even loaded the game up in 640X480 and I still have the exact same issue. It's like it can't cache any texture and just freezes randomly every 5-10 secs. If I stand still it eventually brings everything in and it's fine but then when I move the mouse...it freezes again. Very frustrating...
