NVIDIA optimus problem

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 9:57 pm

Hello fellow skyrimfans!

I'm having a problem where skyrim doesnt detect my GTX 560M, only the INTEL intergrated graphicschip. This makes my skyrim experience awful since i cant even play on low settings without lag.

This is by now a well known problem among PC gamers and there's alot of "Fix" videos etc. out there. But none of these things work for me.
I have tried to set the graphicsunit to my GTX 560M mannualy for skyrim in the NVIDIA controllpanel as suggested in all help videos, but the game will still not detect it.
I have also tried to change the sD3DDevice from the intel chip to my NVIDIA card in the SkyrimPrefs, but nothing ...

Help anyone ?

Have you tried deleting the SkyrimPrefs.ini (and possibly the RenderInfo.txt) in
My Documents\My Games\Skyrim
then loading the Skyrim Launcher and reseting the options?

The only other thing I would suggest is trying to disable the Intel on board graphics completely. The downside would be battery life.

Looks like you cannot disable the IGP (Intel) as it ultimately controls the output. Try setting the Global options (Optimus Control Panel) to always enable the nVidia chipset.

Go into your nvidia Optimus control panel and make sure both:
\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\SkyrimLauncher.exe\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\TESV.exe
are set to use the nvidia graphics chipset

Now i think i got it to work... I just had to rightclick the TESV icon and choose run with NVIDIA Gpu then it finnaly worked. It's just strange that it doesnt work through the NVIDIA controllpannel cuz i did make sure to change both SkyrimLauncher and TESV to NVIDIA chip. Wellwell i think it works fine now, only problem is that i have to rightclick the TESV icon everytime i wanna play skyrim ^^

Ill probably be back with more questions in a near future. Thanks for all of your help !

Changing the graphics card in the control panel doesn't work? Are you sure to hit Apply? Also be sure to set both the launcher and the TES.exe to "High Performance."

If both don't work go into the actual Skyrim folder right click both the applications and double check to see if the default card is saving correctly.
