Oblivionists: Your opinion on Skyrim

I've been reading the morrowind topic with interest. Just wondering how the game compares from your point of view.

Still a couple of weeks til I am able to pick my copy up, install and play XD

I'm a bit of an Oblivion elitist on these forums (check my avatar) so here goes:

It's amazing.

Oblivion is better by a mile. It actually works. The graphics were actually good for the time. The UI wasn't a garish P.O.S. inspired by Apple.

Aside from the fact that the game was made redundant by its own leveling system :P

Pretty much this. Skyrim is what Oblivion should have been. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back now.

i will be revisiting oblivion (will never give up the game as it was my first elder scrolls game that i properly got into).but it might be a while to be honest,as i absolutely love skyrim :celebration: what really does it for me is the detail in the world itself.from seeing steam rising from a river where it is so cold from the snow,to watching salmon jumping up waterfalls (and i have the 360 version, not the super high end pc version  it's just a fantastic escape from reality (but i still love oblivion also

I miss acrobatics, but I seem to be in the minority here.

Athletics being gone's okay with me, but Acrobatics has always been my favorite skill, since Arena, when it was an entire class.

Oblivion was the first and only elder scrolls game ive played.

The bad first. 1. No speed increases for light armor

2. No birth signs

3. Openner too long ( though not annoying like in JRPGS)

4. No Patrick Stewart

5. difficulty slider too general

6. Quickslots clunky

7. Enemies too weak even on master

8. Jumping svcks

The good : Overall much better than oblivion esp the dungeons; they seem very unique.

Skyrim is amazing. Everyone is obviously entitled to their opinions, but I don't see how anyone could do anything but love this game.

O-kay.

I think it's good so far. It's odd how I'm lacking the attention span with it right now, but my experience so far has been pleasant.

I'm hesitant to give a direct comparison but in my ~2 hours of playing, there is not one thing I can think of that Oblivion has done better.

So the story is going great as expected, the new two-hanged weapon system is great. Graphics are not much better if at all than Oblivion was. Dragons sounded cool, but if the combat is the same every time one comes into play then that will be a let down. Simplifying the leveling was a great idea, but so far I think it was over simplified. There really isn't going to be much debating on what I should level up next, lacking the excitement I found with Oblivion (granted there were pointless options). I don't know about anyone else, but I was really hoping for a better horse dismount than Oblivion (its exactly the same). How about a quick dismount off the back as the horse continues running? Gameplay was not improved other than the two-handed system. Sure you got a cool kill scene here and there now, but I was hoping for a new game not an expansion to Oblivion. Biggest problem so far is the graphics, maybe I was just expecting so much more after all those trailers. I know Xbox is not a PC, but there is so much room for improvement. . . . All that being said I loved Oblivion and I am loving Skyrim, just had my hopes for something better.

It's essentially Oblivion with better graphics, but with the one thing Oblivion lacked: polish. Oblivion was a diamond in the rough, and Skyrim is a diamond.

Edit: As for the leveling, I like it. A lot. It's simpler than Oblivion's leveling, but it's also far, far deeper. I think that if we need evidence that depth doesn't need complexity, we can point to this.

2 Words. Better immersion.

The game is oblivion and more, has new features, more polish, updated graphics, more fluent gameplay, improved combat, a new unique storyline. The game will get fixed up with patches I'm sure, the game was only released.... a day ago, officially. I feel more into the world of skyrim and the realism is better. In oblivion I felt forever alone with 2 people a town and the ugly faces. The sound effects are good and the dungeons are 100% better.

Don't get me wrong, I loved oblivion, but now I never plan to play it again.

The main thing I miss is the zooming in during dialogue. I feel no connection with the NPC and are left wondering who they were and what they said.

Removing the paper doll from the menu screen was another huge mistake. What is the point designing and equipping a character when it means nothing from a design POV?

Atmosphere, music and dungeon design are a huge improvement over Oblivion. Thumbs up there.

If your main complaint with the game is the graphics, and you're using an xbox, then it's not bethesda's fault. Developers have pretty much run up against the physical hardware wall for better graphics with the current consoles. It's not going to get any better until a new console comes out, that's just the way it is.

I played quite alot of Ob over the years. I have to say that compared to Skyrim, Ob is a stinking pile of doo doo in my opinion.

I did start with morrowind, maybe thats why.

so far i think skyrim has better music, and better atmosphere and better world views, .

that said, es4 had parry for the sword, better menus, the colors seemed more lucious and fantasy like, and although the skills and minor skills were crazy to look at sometimes.. now i get a dumbed down choice of magika stamina and health and not sure what they are exactly except for magicka.

Compared to this?

Plus, TW2 had the added benefit of actually working at launch. Skyrim is broken.
