OCZ Vertex 2 80GB SSD & RAGE

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 3:29 am

Hey All,

This is my first post on these forums so lets get started.

Yesterday I purchased an OCZ Vertex 2 80GB SSD to replace my old 60GB 5400rpm stock hard drive, not only for RAGE but for GT5 and all my downloaded games as well. What convinced me to do this was the reviews I read which stated great performance gains with GT5 and the console itself. So I thought to myself "what the hell" and gave RAGE a crack with the new SSD installed. The results I'm happy to say were quite impressive, it not only reduced the amount of pop in I was getting to practically none but it also improved my load times. I did manage to get the SSD for $120 Canadian (yup I'm a canuck) so for me it was more than reasonable considering the high prices only a few short years ago. If anyone else happens to want this upgrade I would highly recommend it if you think it's worth the price. But beware not every 2.5" SATA SSD will work, I had previously bought the OCZ Vertex Plus 60GB SSD and it was not functional with my PS3. Just letting people know that there are solutions out there that do work quite nicely. Please leave me feedback and tell me your experience with the SSD should you choose to do it or already have it. It'd be great to know what other people are experiencing.

What's the diff. between 2.5" SATA SSD drives where one works but another won't?

Will all Vertex drives work as long as they are 2.5" SATA?

I needed a ton of space for my games and opted for a Seagate 500GB Momentus XT drive. It is a hybrid SSD and 7600RPM HDD. The SSD portion is only 4GB and you don't get to choose what goes on there, but it places most commonly used files on there. It was $90 and a great upgrade for my PS3. My games load quicker and if there is a game that I play over and over, it loads them quicker as well. While I did notice some pop up while playing RAGE, it was a lot less noticeable. I enjoyed RAGE even before the upgraded HDD and much more so afterwards.

its good to know it works, but still im stickin with my orginal thoughts that ID should have made a game that can actually run on the current ps3 systems stock hardware/hdd. the game should come with a warning sticker that a ps3 hardware/ HDD upgrade is required in order to play the game to its full potential and as the devs intended us to play it an like it should play in the first place. im still a lil annoyed just by the fact that its obvious the game was just not designed properly to run on the ps3's hardware an ID just do not seem to give 2 [censored] about it. i love the game(to some extent) but really think there needs to be more regulation in the gaming industry, these companies keep releasing either broken games they expect to be able to fix at a later date an us to just deal with it, or release games that can barely run on current gen systems it should not be allowed an these companies are literally on the verge of breaking standard trading standards laws an procedures (im unsure of the exact correct term). maybe they should have waited an released rage on the ps4 if it is unable to run on the current ps3's hardware at its full potential.

MaxxAmmo,

I think it has to do with the original Vertex SSD not having built in Trim support on it and it relies on the OS for that, I still haven't figured out why my original Vertex Plus didn't work. I am almost positive it either has to do with Trim support or there was newer firmware on the Vertex 2 that made it compatible with my PS3 in some way. I did everything I could to try and get it working but just couldn't figure it out for the life of me.

The PS3 has some bottlenecks by design despite all the marketing rubbish Sony is spreading.
This also applies to all other Sony consoles released before but now Sony is no market leader anymore and games are optimized for other more profitable (and easier to handle) gaming plattforms.
The PS3 is just not the perfect hardware to run a data hungry application like Rage. Draw your conclusions on what system to buy next time.

well if the game cant run on one system properly it shouldnt be released for it, simple. and i own both systems and actually bought the 360 version first but decided to swap it for the ps3 as the 360 has 3 discs and a massive install size( install im not bothered about tho) there are a couple other reason i got ps3 but im not trying to start a console war. i just want to be able to play the game the same way as everyone else on the other consoles instead of having a game that looks considerably worse an cant run at its optimum performance. if i had looked online first then maybe i would have known not to take back the 360 version an keep it but i should not have to go looking on the forums to ensure the game will run properly on the console system i decide to buy it for( i will likely by skyrim for 360), im buying it on console not pc if i was buying on pc id expect these types of issues due to my hardware but not on console especially not this bad anyway. other glitches an bugs are understandable but this is about the game not running at its optimum on the ps3's stock hardware its different imo an now means that unless they fix it via a patch/update an possibly get sony to allow a bigger install size, if i want to play it how it was meant to played an enjoy it fully i will have to spend more money to upgrade my ps3's HDD.

i will say though apart from this issue i havnt found any others so far an i do enjoy the game but id enjoy it a lot more if it looked nice all the time. it does vary in different areas, some have no texture pop at all an look really nice an you can really get into the game, but then other areas are really really bad an every movement causes texture to pop an you move a lot in this game so the texture is constanstly popping. so areas are just average an you can deal with it as it pops alil when you move around to a new place but it doesnt keep popping so its less noticed.

No interest in starting a console war here either. My point is, that games have always been programmed for a certain target plattform and optimized for this. The PS3 has the least system memory of all available systems that can run Rage. If it would have been optimized for PS3, ALL other versions would have had to cope with lower texture resolution. The PC gamers are already complainig that this game was "made for consoles". The PS3 is just not the perfect hardware to run this game but that doesn't make it really bad, does it?

I recall games running on older consoles/PCs in the 90s that where absolutely unplayable due to hardware restrictions. I consider the texture pop in some kind of ugly but not that much of a problem. I've seen worse.

The problem with Sony consoles has always been that Sony designed a hardware and dictated programmers how to adjust games to make them run perfect on their systems which worked when they were market leader.
Sony's consoles before PS3 dominated the gaming world due to their clever marketing and not due to clever hardware engineering although everybody and their grandmothers thought the Playstations were always the best in graphics which they never were...
Now they aren't market leader anymore and the problem with their lack of being capable in designing an easy to program hardware shows up.
The stupid 8 GB install restriction adds to that problem....

Hello Guys

I support the author of this topic. With an SSD my ps3 games load twice as fast and Rage has almost no pop up (you must try hard to notice, there is barely any pop up). The change was so dramatic that I tought that i should write somewhere about it so people can see that it solves the issue. They should print on the game case: "best played with an SSD HDD".

Another thing is that it is realy mindblowing that ID Soft. managed to do such graphics in 60 frames per second on a PS3 (and we all know how much does ps3 games drop frames).
