Wrong forum. This needs to be moved to CD.

But on topic, that happens a lot. Games should install from disc and only update through Steam. But most times it doesn't.

What you're getting is all the patched content that has come out since Shogun 2 when gold, which is often a month or more prior to release. Increasingly developers are using this opportunity to develop day 1 patches after the master disc has been sent off for retail duplication, and these patches can be quite large. Unfortunately Steam does not compute differences between your files and the patched files and instead simply downloads the new file in its entirety to replace the old one. It's not the most efficient way to distribute the patches, but it IS the most efficient way to store information about the game on Steam's servers and the fastest way for the patch to be rolled out after the developer uploads the new files.

Once you've got the game patched, you can create a Steam backup of the title within Steam to avoid having to download the patch in the future.

You can also set it to not download updates automatically (per game or system wide, I believe).

Shogun 2 installed just fine on my computer. But I've noticed that it sometimes starts downloading when I want it to install from the disc, in this case it was mafia 2. It said that the steam servers were busy, and then it started downloading. It made absolutely no sense at all and since the servers were busy it took freakin' forever to install, but it's not a normal problem (in my case at least) I think I had the same problem with Saints Row 2.

Did you follow these steps? -> https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382
Apparently Valve would rather use more bandwidth downloading games than letting people install from the disk automatically for some reason.
