One Question: Is the game fun?

Post » Thu Nov 29, 2012 6:08 am

Hello,

Recovering WoW addict here who just refuses to engage anymore in this grinding for gear carrot mess of a game.

I noticed that when people often complained about WoW, a common response was: if you don't like it, go play skyrim!

So, that's what I've decided to do!

Right away, I love that it is single-player and I don't have to depend on others for my own personal progress.

Also, the game appears to be very long, with TONS of lore.

I LOVE lore.

So, I guess I have one basic question: Is the game fun and enjoyable to play?

I want to be logging in every day cause I love playing the game, not because I'm feeling pressure from 9 other players demanding I rearrange my real-life schedule for a video game.

So yeah, hoping this game will kill my wow addiction.

Do you think there's hope for me if I begin playing Skyrim?

Just looking at your forums, it's interesting not to see thread after thread full of complaints.

You've obviously not been looking

EDIT: Well, i'd like to say "Yes, you will most certainly enjoy Skyrim after playing WoW", except I can't. I never played WoW for various reasons. What I can say is Skyrim, for the most part, is very fun, addictive and has a huge fan base as can be seen on here. If you play the PC version, something I don't have the luxury of, you will probably enjoy the game even more due to the number of mods that are out there.

If you have a rough idea of the kind of character you want to play, then i'm sure you will enjoy Skyrim as much as the rest of us.

The game is quite fun and enjoyable to play for me personally. Frankly, the few who disagree with me are the perfectionists and greedy people who are never pleased.

To get back on topic, all indications point to you enjoying the game. If this is the first Elder Scrolls title you have played, you will remember it fondly, as many players do with the first experience of getting their feet wet in the series. For me, that experience was Morrowind, which I also highly recommend.

Welcome aboard. :obliviongate:

Thanks for the honest reply.

Truth be told, if I asked the same question on the WoW forums, I can guarantee there would be responses of "no", and I would be one of them.

That tells yous something about the state of that game right now . . .

I am playing on a PC (alienware), and Im kinda amazed that I can actually be a highborn high elf in SKyrim - that was essentially my character in WoW, and even gave him the same name :D

It's VERY fun!
I'd suggest, since you said you like lore, to read as many of the books as you can.

Edit: Curses! I was hoping to have another orc enthusiast on our hand.... :(

The game is great, except for Destruction magic; it's really bad; at least on Master level anyway. But give it a spin and maybe your opinion will differ. But since it looks like you're going to be a magic user type, begin enchanting stuff that reduces destruction costs, otherwise you're going to be quite frustrated.

I think Skyrim is tremendous fun. It's my favorite Elder Scrolls game. I have played WoW off and on since 2007 myself and I like both. But I like Skyrim better. ;)

I agree. There are a fair number of complaints to be sure but it is balanced with a lot of praise. I tend to be one of the complainers, but it is only in the hopes that Beth will listen and improve the game. I don't necessarily think it is the best roleplaying game I have played but it is definately one of the most fun games I have played. I played Skyrim a lot for the first year after release.

I've never played WoW and don't intend to so I don't have any idea how similar the two games are. All I can say is if you are more of a singleplayer person you will probably like it.

Yeah, I should have said that - my bad. For all it's bugs and glitches, Skyrim is still in my top 5 list. Good call Turija!

hmmm, maybe I will be an Orc! :D

How important are racials? I got the streategy guide, so that should help me get started.

I also have a gaming mouse (razer naga), so I seem set.

Very true statement. It's rather incredible all the different things done to ensure you keep playing (i.e., keep paying for an extra month or some kinda of upgrade).

I think, however, the worse is having to fight the SAME boss over and over and over, just hoping that the ring gods will give you the drop you need - otherwise it's a whole week till another chance.

It keeps you coming back and playing, but you aren't having fun. It's more like standing at a slot machine, putting quarter after quarter hoping that you'll finally win.

Except when the slot machines does give you something, it's not like an AMAZING bonus, rather it's just to keep you up with the people who've had better luck than you.

ANyway, I could go on and on about the horrible MMO experience.

The people who responses here already seem like a million times nier than WoW people, and from your comments, it sounds like I am in for a very exciting time :)

I don't mind getting addicted again - but I just want it based on me actually enjoying the game this time ;-)

I like Elves, and I like being range, so I was also thinking of being forest elf with a bow and arrow.

Understatement of the Fourth Era DHHHUUUUUUUUURRRR
Anyways, in all seriousness, welcome to The Elder Scrolls.
If not recognized for its true brilliance and magnificence; lobotomies may be in order

Hmmm, well, I like all the things you mentioned :)

But I admit that I LOVE deep story, interesting characters, and complex quests! So, is there an elsewhere you had in mind?

Okay, I suggest you start with Skyrim, if you find it pleasing I encourage you to go backwards... so here's the order I'd go in:

Skyrim
Oblivion
Morrowind
Daggerfall and Arena

Fallout: NV.
Ask about it on the fallout fourm to get a good idea of it.
It's one of my favourite games and probably one of the best written and balanced of the past few years.

There are still many interesting characters, the story isn't super deep, however, not as shallow as some would make it out to be, and none of the quest are too complex.
I'm a huge role-player, and I still play it to death. :)

Morrowind is still an amazing game, and has very deep story, complex quests, and interesting characters. The trade off? The combat and graphics are not good... :(
