My one Random gripe with NV

Post » Mon Dec 27, 2010 6:49 pm

Okay, this keeps bugging me. I know it is a bit strange, but it really makes the wasteland look silly to me.

Why are the railroad tracks so messed up? They go up and down 45 degree angles constantly. At first I thought that it was because the NCR laid them, and because they are post war, they don't know about grades and stuff. Then I found RR crossings. This also threw out the argument of washouts and erosion.

I know, it is a silly thing to gripe about, but it is just really dumb looking. Does this bother anyone else, or am I just whining about nothing?

(Oh, and has anyone else noticed that Cheyenne's eyes have a hard time staying inside the dog's head?)

I noticed this actually. I used to build model railroads and remember thinking it was rather silly. But I dismissed it and never gave it a though since.

To be honest, I always though the proportions in this engine were a little "off". The roads seemed a little too narrow; houses seemed a little too small on the outside; street signs and cars seemed a little small. To be honest, I can't quite pinpoint it exactly, but I've always noticed it since oblivion. The frustrating thing is, I can't even describe what it is exactly that bothers me about it; the proportions just seem off.

It's funny how the strangest things can bother you about something.

I've deffinatly noticed the roads being too narrow and the cars being too small, but i've never gave much notice to the railway, I did what needed to be done in Boulder City and F'd off never to return.

Yea I try not to notice too much.... I mean otherwise you might start wondering 'Its been two hundred years, why the hell can't you people drag the eroding car's off the streets in the middle of your cities' or.. 'Ok... you have robots but not motor vehicles?' or 'Why in the hell would bottle caps become a currency?' (that one might be explained in the lore somewhere though)... or 'Why did the government collapse if everything seemingly worked right in their doomsday plan?' .... alot of reasonable questions.

Most of the railroads are supposed to be post war hand cart efforts. There are a few notes on a computer in the NCR Correctional Facility that tell you that the warden there was complaining to his superiors because he was expected to keep the prisoners working on the new rail lines with so few guards and there are a bunch of hand cars in the prison grounds.

I assume these are supposed to be the narrow brown tracks. The wider tracks, like the ones with the train on them near Novac, i assume are meant to be pre war.

The cars still being on the roads is a fair enough gripe but they do have working vehicles within the logic of the game, they just aren't seen in use excluding the Vertibirds in FO3 (mostly because of engine limitations I'd imagine). There are several locations where there are pristine, obviously in use vehicles, like the bikes outside the saloon in Goodsprings.

As for the bottlecaps thing, it's supposed to be stupid. It's a joke based on the idea that in an apocalypse valuable things would become worthless and comparatively worthless things would become valuable. I dont really get what your getting at with your last question.

I noticed this. The first time I saw it was during a VATS attack. I had assumed that the dog had been killed by geckos just at the moment I entered VATS... But he (or she) was just fine afterward and merrily followed it's master wherever she went... Eyes floating disembodied along side of it's head.
