One small thing that makes a big difference

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 5:00 am

I know everyone's referencing DaOc here, but there's at least one other thing I would love to see that they implemented. In Dark Age, when you saw an enemy, this is what was above their heads.

(Example)

Breton Champion
Altmer Savant
Nord Jarl

or etc.

You did NOT see

Raisslin Thunderthighs

In fact when you clicked on them their name would show up in the chat box, so you had to look for it. But for all intents and purposes, to you they were Breton. This act of turning each person into a faceless representative of their faction went a great deal to help DaOc have realm pride. It becomes less about the people, and more about the faction. The only way someone's name would pop up above their heads is if they were a person of great importance, that they've killed A LOT of people. It took a lot of time, too. Not something you can achieve in a couple of months, either. So if you saw someone and their name was above their head, you knew you were boned.

What do you guys think?

I like it, only so I don't have to look at L33T_DRAG0NBORN or LEROYJENKINS when I explore the map.

I like. A lot. Adds a sense of faction pride as you said, and solves the issue of seeing Lego1as and xAr4gornx pass you by.

It won't stop them from bunny-hopping everywhere, but at least it's an improvement.

this is an odd one out. GW2 has that too and im not very sure about this one. Faction Pride is important, but the thing is. this beeing TES it already is there without any of that.
I mean just look at the whole Argonians vs Dunmer rage wars. People get fanatical in TES we dont need to enforce this.

If you look at it from the other side, having player names in PvP does alot of other stuff. I used to play alot of a little game called Savage 2. It was a PvP game with a nice melee combat system.
At some point in time it went free to play and had an influx of newer players. So now there was a huge skill diversity. Most games with around 20 players in them had 4-5 players in them that used to play this game for years. Basically Savage 2 beeing kind of an RTS / Shooter / Melee combat hybrid, these guys (me including depending on the server) took the roles of Heroes. We had a few people, anyone would just run the [censored] away from because they knew theyd get slaughtered in seconds.

I want this. I want to be known for my skill and feroicty and feared by my enemies.

As the OP pointed out, DAoC has this too. If you perform really well in PVP, your name is shown above your head for all to see. It suggests that you're so famous for your skill in battle that your name is known all over Tamriel. If you see a named player, you know they're a bad-ass.

i like the idea, but i never really care about what people name their characters. I just live and let live. Titles can and are used the same way. if you see a certain title you know they've accomplished X, Y, or Z. I always enjoyed googling titles i didn't know what they werefromand seeing what another player had accomplished. I was reading about tera the other day and saw the political system they have with elections and stuff it was actually really interesting concept, haven't played though. Obviously if you see the emperor you know they're a pvp god, i'd like to see a mix of the polotics and titles

I don't want to see names above anything's head tbh... it just seems lame like in wow the cities were basically green and blue text overlapping everywhere

I like the sound of that. Hopefully TESO implements that system.

I loved this idea in DAoC. As others have stated, it really created a sense of realm pride. But also, it was really fun at the beginning to find out what realm rank each name represented and how many realm points it took to reach that realm rank. When you came across someone really high it was like" holy ****! look out for that dude!"

This makes me curious as to how the PvP ranks will work too. I hope it's something similiar to Realm Ranks in DAoC. That was a great system.

I like this idea. I would say that the only time the Race Class ID is replaced by a name is if you are on the other person's friend list. Or FOE list.

It would stand to reason that while Cyrodiil will be the open PvP province, It's going to have towns and cities and other areas like the other provinces. Some taverns in the border regions might adopt a neutrality position with a policy that "All are welcome here if they leave the war outside."

In such social environments people from opposing sides could interact and add each other to their in-game social network. Those in the same faction would add to the friend list. Those on opposing factions would go on the foe list.

It is my hope that while our characters on opposing sides raise hell with each other in the contest for control of Cyrodiil, that we as players never get to a point where we cannot say to each other, "Good Game!" at the end of a particularly intense battle.

At the very least, there ought to be an option to turn off names/titles above character avatars.

There just about always is. I doubt that option won't be in the game.

Oddly, guild tags can do that too. Saw it in WoW, when horde would simply afk out of an Arathi Basin when they saw the tag cuz they knew they were about to get 5 capped.

Mmos are all about building relationships with friends and foes. I prefer to know who i am fighting. Its easy to please everyone as you can usually turn on or off these tags.

It does tell you their name, when you click on them in the chat box it shows up. And when you're getting attacked their name shows, too. But just not in the target window / above their head.

Oh i never played DaOC but i think this feature is so good!!

Why are MMOs not implementing this?? It will help in the Immersion so much!
Make it toggleable of course for people who wants it activated by default.
