Open World or Zoned?

Post » Wed Jan 30, 2013 5:38 am

Quick question: I'm aware that each province isn't fully created, and that only two or three cities from each province will be accessible at launch. What I haven't been able to find out is if Tamriel is still completely open, or if the world is cut up into zones with loading screens. Going with Skyrim's landscape as an example, do we know if traveling from, say, the tundra of Whiterun to the forests of Falkreath will be completely open? Or will there be specific points at which we "exit" one area and "enter" another with a loading screen transition?

Thanks :)

Cut up into large zones apparently.

I hope it's open world, loading screens are never fun. From say, Skyrim to Morrowind though I could understand a loading screen, or going into a dungeon or raid.

We don't know yet. But theres no real reason to think it'll be any more zoned off then any other MMO.

Me too. Loading between provinces and dungeons/interiors would be fine, but I'd be a little bummed if each area is zoned.

Well, WoW for example is an incredibly open world. There's something wonderful about thinking you could travel from one end of a continent to the other, across various geographical landscapes, all without a single loading screen. It adds to the sense of exploration.

Guild Wars 2 is a recent example of a zoned world, where each major landscape was separated by loading screens. Still a great game though, so I'll be interested in TESO either way - I'd just much prefer an open world.

Well like I said we just don't know yet. Tamrial is also a different type of map then say WoW is. Tamrial besides a few Islands is 90% all in the same continent or land mass. if I had to guess though I'd say each faction area will be open for the most part with having to zone into Cyrodiil or maybe if you fast travel across a continent. But again we just don't know enough yet to say with much certainty.

I am pretty sure each alliance area will be zoned from the other. And I expect cryodill to be separated from the others too. It would make sense for the purpose of preventing unwanted entry to home areas as well as keeping people from zone hopping during pvp.
