Opening the map shuts off my PC

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 9:44 am

Every time I open the world map my computer shuts down instantly (as if the plug was pulled). I have the latest video drivers installed. And I am able to play other games (such as BF3) without any issues. Any help would be much appreciated!

My specs:
CPU: AMD FX 8150
RAM: 16GB Patriot G2 1600MHz
Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX
GPU: Sapphire HD 6950 TOXIC Edition
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (SP1)

I don't remember the exact brand. But I do know it's a 700w.

Edit: It's an ATON Super Charge 700W Modular PSU with 2 12V Rails.

Two questions:

1) What are your CPU/GPU temps when this happens? (You can use a program like Core Temp to monitor and log this. It will log temps until the moment of shutdown, and hopefully save that log so you can look at what was going on once you get the PC rebooted.)

2) Does your computer power off and stay off, or does it power off and then restart immediately?

I had a very similar problem a few months ago, although it was harder to diagnose--happened much more intermittently. In my case, my PC was powering off and then restarting immediately. Turned out the PSU had gone faulty.

The first thing I'd suspect in your case is that your PSU has gone bad, but I wouldn't rule out overheating, either. If your PC is powering off and staying off, that often points more to overheating than PSU failure.

Wow, that stinks. Sounds like a bad PSU to me..but I am no expert.

My GPU temps hover around 60c and I believe my CPU temps are around 30-35c. I originally thought it was my PSU, but I can play BF3 maxed out with no problem. And Skyrim only crashes when I open the world map. And my PC shuts off and stays off, I have to pull the plug and plug it back in before it will even turn back on.

Posted a solution here:

Under clock your gpu to default clocks for the 6950.

Right click on the TESV exe and set compatibility as win vista service pack 2.

Run game as administrator and in windowed mode.

If you STILL happen to get the odd map crash here or there, then try using an fps limiter and set it to no higher than 60.

GOOD LUCK (worked for me =D)

EDIT: default clocks for the 6950 are 800mhz gpu and 1250mhz memory.

OMG! It works! :D Thank you so very much! Hopefully the overclocking issue gets fixed soon! I will miss my increased GPU performance, but at least I can play it now!

I've come across the same problem. Playing the game fine for age...then BAM! I open the map and my GPU cuts off signal to the monitor. Immediately after that, the GPU fan starts spinning at 100% (my PC doesn't power off like the original poster's does...only the GPU signal is lost) and I have to do a hard shutdown.

This has happened a few times to me, but what's interesting is that normally my PC boots up fine afterwards, except for the last time the crash happened. Upon rebooting I got a system error in BIOS telling me that "O.C Failed! To go to setup, press F1" etc. Kinda weird as I haven't O.C'd my CPU or GPU. The only thing O.C'd is my RAM (as it runs at 1600MHz) and is configured in BIOS to use X.M.P (Xtreme Memory Profiling - makes it's super easy to set the RAM at it's specified speed and voltages).

So either my GPU is being mac-sixual (I am using a HD5870 Sapphire Vapor-X which is factory O.C'd) or I've just had a RAM stick die on me. Thinking about running a UBCD, although my PC has been running like a dream. Can play Battlefield 3 on high settings and it doesn't give the PC a reason to neck itself.

Any thoughts on this map crashing problem? I'm going to try the method of resolution mentioned in the above post, but it'd be good to know why this is happening.

PC Specs are:

Intel Core i7-930 @ 2.8GHz (stock)
Asus P6X58D-E mobo
Radeon 1GB HD5870 Sapphire Vapor-X @ stock reference levels
Windows 7 Pro x64
Corsair 6GB Tri-channel RAM 1600MHz (using X.M.P setting in BIOS)
