My opinion of Dawnguard (Don't read if you haven't completed

Post » Wed Nov 21, 2012 2:54 am

Got and played through dawnguard yesterday, buying it three hours after it released on Steam, and I gotta say that I am very impressed, I finally have a follower with a personality and a backstory. And yes, I do consider it to be worth the wait and worth the price (though, better communication from Beth in the future would be nice, just sayin'). I'm gonna be playing through it again, starting a fresh new game in Skyrim so I can make Serana human and make sure I don't turn myself into a vampire to get into the Soul Cairn for the first time.

Throughout the story, I was expecting two things to happen:

1) I was expecting Isran to be a psychotic [censored] who tears the dawnguard apart almost and then rushes into battle against Harkon, only to get himself and most of Dawnguard killed.

2) I was expecting Serana to betray me and try to kill me once I had all three scrolls and the bow.

Neither of these things happened, and that's a good thing, cos those two plot devices are so overdone in lately.

My only gripe is that, after making Serana human, I will not be able to marry her, which seems odd considering how close they seem to become throughout the storyline. Is there a chance of this being "fixed" at any point? I like the idea of my hero character convincing Serana to step away from the darkness and for them to fall in love and marry afterwards.

EDIT: Also, is there a level requirement for starting the Dawnguard questline? pretty sure I heard/read somewhere that it was level 14, but I'm not sure.

I'm going to strongly advise against turning Serana into a human. I can understanding wanting to do so from a certain roleplaying angle, but I tried it (even after someone else advised me not to), and it svcks. It doesn't change your relationship with her in any meaningful way (even though it arguably should), and she still won't look quite human (the whites of her eyes will remain yellow).

And to answer your last question, no, there is no level requirement. You can start Dawnguard at level 1 if you want.

Is there a possibility to cure her mother? After Serana became human I returned to the place, where I met her mother but I couldn't find her.

I doubt she would EVER become human, she clearly loves the immortality and power she gets from her vampiric blood, add that to being able to spend eternity studying and improving both her skill in alchemy and necromancy.

Fair enough, but I want to at least have the option to do so, and the cosmetic stuff can be patched.

Also, thanks for the heads up, I'll go to the Dawnguard base as soon as I get the full Fus-Ro-Dah shout and get officially recognised as the Dragonborn, I wanna see how that changes my conversation with the dragon in the Soul Cairn.

It does change, :) The indicators so far are if you have not completed Dragon Rising, completed Dragon Rising and completed the main quest, ie slaying Alduin. :)

Not gonna spoil what is said though. :)

Fair enough, I'll grab Serana and go do the MQ before going into the Soul Cairn then :)

So... I convinced Serana to become human... Disappointed in the total lack of a reaction from her mother, considering the way she acts when you are with her in the Soul Cairn the first time. Also, what the hell is up with Serana's "Human" eyes? They have green irisis, but the whites are bright yellow, and it looks stupid, it looks like somebody photoshopped yellow eyes onto a face, please make the eyes normal looking, Beth, I want Serana to be believably human. Also, she's still using vampiric abilities and, according to the wiki anyway, is still able to give you vampirism during combat...

Wrong. Level requirement is level 10.

Wrong. Start a new character, leave Helgen and you can start at level 1. Just head to Dayspring canyon. Check it out for yourself if you don't believe me.

I don't see bethesda making Serana marriageable. I mean she turns you down, I'm guessing bethesda didn't want her to be married. Your in a relationship with her anyway. What would the point of marriage be? Other than more gold. :P

Go http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim_talk:Dawnguard_%28quest%29and scroll to the bottom section of the talk page where the heading reads "There is no level prerequisite." I wrote that, and it's already been confirmed.

That's just the level that is suggested for people who want to play dawnguard because of all the high level enemies. Its also when guards tell you about rumors about the dawnguard as well. But if you want you can start dawnguard at level 1 if you wanted to.

Oh for crying out loud....

Look, I tried this myself. I started a completely brand new character. I left Helgen. I went straight to Dayspring Canyon and began the Dawnguard questline. I was level 1. Say it with me: "Level 1"

Try it yourself.

First off, stop hijacking my thread with your argument, take it to Private Messages if you have to, and second off, does anybody else have trouble getting Serana to wear a full set of armour (She won't wear armor if she's wearing a hood, for example, and the only armour I've managed to get her to wear is the Hooded Thalmor Robes)?

Rats. That was meant to be a new post and I inadvertently edited my last one.

In answer to your last question, I can only get Serana to wear armor classifed as "Light"

1. You're the one who raised the question about the level requirement in the first place. I had the courtesy to give you the correct answer, and I'm defending against incorrect answers. I'm not going to just leave it with someone saying "No, it's level 10" and take it to PMs when I know that's the wrong answer. What if someone else (like you) is reading this thread and also wants the correct answer?

2. You seemed surprised that Serana's eyes didn't turn out the way you'd expected. I did warn you this would happen (check my first post).

1) Meh, fair enough, I just don't want my thread getting closed, it annoys the hell out of me when that happens.

2) Yes, you did, but I thought you meant they'd stay looking vampiric, now they just look stupid.

I modded Serana's head mesh and got rid of the glowing eyes. I have not cured her, but I did install a non-glowing vampire eye mod that worked for my character and most NPC vampires, but not Serana (my character was already a vampire and I created a custom vamp eye texture that I really liked some time ago, which looked really dumb when they made it glow). Serana's eye glow is set in her head mesh. I assume this mod would also fix the cured Serana's eyes. If there interest, I will throw it up on the Nexus.

Please do, her eye look so stupid atm, really out of place, also, is it possible (and if it's not too much work) could you please make her skin a little less pale as well?

I've made a mod that fixes Serana after she's been made human, however it doesn't seem to work when I upload it to Steam, but works fine when I upload it to Nexus.

EDIT: If I'm not allowed to post links here, lemme know and I will remove it
