Optional chat bubbles ? (please !)

Post » Sat Aug 17, 2013 4:15 am

Hello everyone,

Being a roleplay enthusiast for some years, I was really sad to read in the roleplay wise "ask us anything" that chat bubbles weren't planned so far.

My purpose here isn't about whining and threatening not to buy the game if devs don't add them, though I'm convinced it would be very sad not to have this basic feature because it is a potential deal-breaker for MANY roleplayers.

Some want them desperately and some others don't, thus the best choice would be to make them an OPTION, isn't it ?

I sincerly hope that those who don't like them would be keen enough to vote in favor of this option, just to make this game enjoyable for your fellow roleplayers. And if you do so, I'd like to thank you very much in their name

I have no problems with chat bubble on two conditions. One, I never have to see a chat bubble in the game ever. Two, chat bubbles are only allowed in bars and in groups.

Some crafty Lua modder will probably have a totally optional chat bubble mod in the first few weeks, giving the option to people who want it, while letting the rest of us not have them.

I doubt it. I don't think chat bubbles falls under the GUI umbrella.

Unfortunately you can't make/change those chat bubbles with lua at all. Those are part of the 3d world, and that code is strictly off-limits to addons.

I find it very hard from you to decide absolutely no one could have chat bubbles, since you could just turn them off...

While I voted yes, because I don't care if you guys get them, I can see why people would vote no.

If a person does not like them, they might feel it's a waste of time to spend time for the developers to make them.

Yes indeed. Though this isn't by far the most time consuming feature to add...

Mostly it depends on whether or not the packets from the chat server part of the system are identified as such. Then a mod simply has to wait for those packets, check to see if they're a /say, /yell, /party, or whatever, and pop up an onscreen element with the containing text.

You'd be surprised what you can do with Lua. Chat bubbles are not a part of the world at all--You're basically equating them with chairs, mobs, NPCs, and buildings. All they are is an onscreen indicator that someone else is talking.

Also, I didn't decide anything for anyone else, just voiced my opinion on it. I don't care for chat bubbles in my gaming experience, and I don't find it that difficult or immersion breaking to glance down to the corner every few seconds to see what's going on. So I'm not bothered in the slightest by them not being there.

Chat bubbles ruin my immersion so I don't want them in the game.

Since I said my immersion is broken that means I'm serious. Broken immersion = not buying the game.

You sir realise that your choice will prevent roleplayers from having what they want so bad, whereas the other choice wouldn't have changed your gaming experience at all while making other players much pleased ?

Also allow me to insist : creating chat bubbles with lua is NOT possible.

Believe me, I would be so glad to be wrong...

I Say no, and ill continue to say no from this point on. The more the subject is brought up the more i feel like im begin harassed by telemarketers or something. Never used them never will seen plenty of games do just fine without them. NOPE.

I'm so deeply sorry for harrasing you that much.

May I suggest you not to read those "telemarketers" threads in order not to lose your cool ?

The topic asks if they should be a toggle-able option, if that is the case then I would be OK with it. They are something I would not be likely to use but if other players want to use them then fine. :)

How does my opinion prevent anyone from having anything? If the developers have already decided they're not putting in the effort, I'd much rather they not put in that effort when they could spend that time doing something more important, like making sure that the skills are balanced, or that bugs are being fixed.

Incidentally, the role-players aren't united in wanting chat bubbles, more than one of them has spoken up in the previous threads on this topic to say they don't like them.

As for what Lua can do in a game--It's the same scripting language used in mods for WoW, and those modders didn't seem to have any trouble making brand new onscreen elements show up. You're underestimating both the scripting language and the resourcefulness of the game modding community.

This pretty much.

If it's toggle-able, it doesn't really affect you if you keep it turned off. As long as no significant developer time is spent on adding this feature, I really could care less.

As you seem to insist, please prove what you say and give us one single example of a lua addon that creates or changes dialogue bubbles in "WoW". I promess I'll delete this whole topic right away if you are really able to find such a thing :)

How about two? http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info22144-TransparentChatbubbles.html. http://www.wowace.com/addons/bubblicious/. There are more, but you only asked for one that creates or changes them. Since WoW has them built in, two that change 'em for you.

Voted yes if for no other reason then to make the hand full of posters who want this to stop spamming threads about it.

You mod a lot more than the GUI in WoW. I think that was the point.

Nice try.

But the only thing all those mods may change is the font, probably by modding the fonts folder... not bubbles directly. Anything else would be altering the 3-d world (as I stated before...) and this is against EULA.

Goodbye.

Chat bubbles are a UI element, the same as the messages from other people in the chat box. The only difference is how they're presented on screen.

Did you look at the second one? It lists:

1) Change the Font of the bubbles to match the font of the chatframe, and size the font however you like
2) Change the outline of the chat bubbles to match the type of chat
3) Enable display of raid icons
4) Enable dynamic compression of the chat bubbles so they only display 1 line of text (unless you mouse over them)

Sounds like a lot more than just the font being changed. Since you're just going to say anything I offer up isn't good enough, I'm just going to say that you broke your promise.
