Red Dead Redemption,

Sure it's not exactly a rpg, but you can roleplay in it easily, and it is jut hands down amazing.

I loooooove the story too.

RDR is one of my favorite games too. And the story moved me so much!

I also like the Fallout series. Assassin's Creed series. The Witcher 1+2 (though not quite open-world).

Avernum (or Exile) 3 was open-world-ish. I had a lot of fun with that a few years ago. Might just be nostalgia though, I never really replayed it.

I played EVE Online for about 6 years before eventually getting a real life - its definitely the best sandbox / openworld MMO imho and the community is great, just requires that you dedicate large chunks of your life to it to get the most out of it, and be prepared to wait for hours to get fleet combat action while listening to babbling Russian psychopaths - when it happens though, it is truly awesome - literally over 1000 players fighting in big spaceships in the same field of battle.
Also a big fan of Guild Wars and can't wait for Guild Wars 2.

Those two, and Fallout are the only games I've felt really connected to and want to play over and over again, like Skyrim.

Ultima 7 was awesome.

But I feel open-world RPGs are starting to become an oxymoron because it is a sign of the times. I find myself enjoying more "close-world" RPGs like Mass Effect 2. Themeparks are starting to become more enjoyable for me.

I just finished LA Noire, but I am more interested in the story than exploring the whole of LA. There's just no reason to explore. Nothing happens outside the street crimes and main story.

Or maybe it's because open-world RPGs are not done right. I remember it was interesting to explore Ultima 7 because I'd never know what I would find in caves. I may find more magic armor, magic weapons (such as the fire sword that also acted like a torch), treasure in the form of gold bars, jewelry, dragons that drop jewels, interesting creatures like that Unicorn that is a virgin-detector lol, the Cyclops that could talk and ask the Avatar why his people were always the target of genocide, the crazed sultan suffering from delusions that had the powerful stone harpy guarding his treasure, etc.

In Skyrim there is no such incentive to explore.

Yep. Also, the mayor of Britain who you could stalk late at night and confront him when he cheats on his wife, the key to the farmer's shed eaten by a fish found washed up on a riverbank which nets you the Hoe of Destruction, killing Lord British with the hanging plaque and finding the note about his illegitimate child... little things like that which add a lot of detail to the game.

I actually wasn't going to say TES since I don't consider the one I played, Oblivion, one of the best.

Fallout: New Vegas, Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 are my three favourite RPG's ever.

It's not open world, but Vampire the Masquerade is amazing. You won't regret, it's more in line with a Deus Ex HR where it has small hubs.

Who said The Witcher? Witcher is neither open world or an rpg.

You mean as a release of neverous energy because you don't want to face the fact that we had far superior games back then? System Shock was amazing, all old school games were so very very deep and at the time still cutting edge graphics.

Just because you have polished turds today doesn't mean you have any right to laugh at the legends that built the framework that got corrupted by coporate greed. Video gaming was at its best when it was completely un-cool and only people who loved games were making them.

Youthful ignorance makes me laugh.

This is truth right here.

I suspect he is part of the group of people who don't consider a game an RPG if it does not have a character customization feature at the beginning of the game that plays like a Ken&Barbie dress-up simulator.

Can we please not ask that question? We'll be here all night trying to define RPG.

I think if Warhammer ever made a game it would be good as they already have their races and lore etc and I guess they could possibly have the funds for a major design team.

Umm.. Warhammer as a company or game? Because there is an MMO based on the Warhammer universe.

As for open-world RPGs, I'm not sure anything can compete with an MMO because the worlds are ever changing/increasing. As far as MMOs, I really loved Dark Age of Camelot. Lots of different areas, lots of quests, lots of things to see and do... until they destroyed the game with their 2nd expansion. (As far as I know, it's still running, though it's down to a single server now.)

Mount & Blade is an extremely sandbox game, but not very "open" to exploration.

Gothic 2 was the closest thing I found to mimic the same type of open world feeling as TES. I never could get 1 or 3 to run so not sure about them, but Gothic 2 was ok. (Gameplay was a little harder then I think it needed to be, but whatever.)

And those of you saying Two Worlds is so great? Why? I couldn't honestly get past the clunky graphics and the absolutely horrible voice acting.

Considering that people are bringing up Red Dead Redemption, Saints Row, Far Cry and Assassin's Creed in an RPG recommendation thread, I think that may not be so bad.

Yes, these... very good RPGs for their time, only bested by, indeed, Daggerfall and Morrowind. And since some people are mentioning mmorpgs as well and nobody dares to admit it: World of Warcraft. Yes!

It's got good gaming mechanics, the largest open world out there, it definately classifies as an RPG and is relatively well balanced. Never mind the abundance of nerdraging teenagers in this game, it's still a topclass game.
If MMORPGs are ellegible then I think LOTRO has the best art direction and it's world and story are by far bigger than Wow and more immersive

Sacred 2 is pretty good. It has huge map, but some is covered in impassable forests. It's similar to WoW, but I've never played it, so I can only go by what my friends tell me.

Fallout 3 is a good one as well, I wouldn't recommend New Vegas, though.

How's the Witcher not an RPG?

I don't mind if a game doesn't let you choose your character, but when you don't get to choose your character, and you're stuck with a single combat style (two handed swords or nothing) you really don't have any choice in anything at all.

Considering that people are bringing up Red Dead Redemption, Saints Row, Far Cry and Assassin's Creed in an RPG recommendation thread, I think that may not be so bad.

RDR is at least open world so it fits half the criterion of this thread, TW2 is definitely not open world, it's just an RPG (if you're generous) This isn't a topic merely about what games you like, it's about open world rpgs, no more no less. Stuff like RDR is only there as an honourable mention, because those people who enjoy open world rpgs tend to enjoy open world games in general, since the central theme of open world games is freedom and exploration. Linear games just dont make sense to get mentioned here.

Let's not start this again. I've been in too many of these conversations to know that it will consume the thread.

Personally, I think Mabinogi is the best MMO that I have played.
