OUYA (ooo-ya): A New Kind of Console

Post » Wed Jul 11, 2012 4:18 am

So I was just perusing the Reddits and I cam across this:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console

I'm kind of excited for this. This thing has the potential to be AMAZING. I'm also digging the stylish design.

What do you think?

There's already a thread about Kickstarters and the Ouya has already been mentioned.

But yes, it is pretty promising and I've already donated to it.

Plug TV into PC - problem solved.

This OUYA could be a nice little middle ground though. Best of luck to it. No interest personally though.

The only technology/product design I would be interested in right now would be a coffee maker.

Don't you mean the oposite, plug the pc into the tv?

I read the article and while it reeks of marketing and bias, I will keep my eye on this. Sounds interesting! So, would this FINALLY mean that console commands could come to this? Mods for consoles? This...would be great for Fallout/TES. Although I just hope the specs are *at least* beyond the PS3 and 360.(hell, the vita came close and that's a handheld...)

Plug Android into TV and connect a bluetooth controller like many out there = Ouya....

It's an android nettop powered by a Tegra3 SoC. You can go out and buy what is effectively an Ouya right now at any store that sells tablets + from most of the cellphone carriers (same specs as a few different android phones)

Maybe I'm the only one who bothered actually reading the kickstarter...

I read it too, I don't know why you're thinking I haven't. I'm well aware it's an android.

You said "I just hope the specs are *at least* beyond the PS3 and 360"

The Tegra3 SoC is pretty cool, but it's still lacking in a number of fields and is outperformed by other SoCs.

Well, I figured that if a handheld could get close to current consoles, surely a tablet would be capable of the same. I'm not really familiar with anything tablet/pad related.

I can't see this appealing to anyone who already owns a PC made in the last 5 years.

First of all, The PS VIta isn't as powerful as the 360 or PS3. Given it's limited screen size, it's apparent power does increase, but even then It's not as powerful as a 360 or PS3. Second of all, there's the underlying implementation of software, and some of Android's way of doing things (specifically: http://nfarina.com/post/8239634061/ios-to-android#animation) makes it less optimizable, which will take another hit to performance.

I'd say this is around PS2/Xbox original level.

1) Worst name for a console I've ever heard

2) I don't want the free to play/buy extra features model expanding further into the console market

3) The PS4 will be better, with free access to PSN

4) Not interested

I know it's not as powerful, that's why I said close. Besides, I'm pretty sure Sony decided to downgrade some of the specs on the vita for costs, and I was under the impression that tablet>handheld so that could come even closer.

Well, I built a new rig in October of 2011 and I think the Ouya is pretty cool.

The PS Vita uses a Cortex A9, same as the Tegra3.... Cortex A15s haven't been released past preproduction yet...

I'm surprised to see the overwhelmingly positive response from the community. Although, I won't be donating, I'll keep an eye on the project.

On a related note, I reckon the developers are all going http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG_6CopW9GQ

The presentation and idea is entirely too artsy-fartsy for me.
